DSLR to iPad direct live feed INPUT?
I want to use an iPad2 as a live view external monitor.
Can I hardwire an iPad2 to a Canon 7D and get a LIVE feed?
I know iPad does output but can it input?
Thanks!

kiboko,
Now that I like and seems to fit the bill. The price tag makes me cringe though. I'll have to read some reviews. Thanks
Hi everyone,
My question is similar, but what I need it for is different.
I have an iPad 3 64 GB, and shooting with a Nikon D-80. I have worsening vision loss, and looking for other options to continue taking photos. Since I don't shoot in a studio, mostly outdoors in mixed weather conditions, having a laptop on location is not possible. With the iPad however, it is easier for mixed settings because of it's profile, I have an OtterBox Defender case and other goodies to keep it safe and dry, and it's easier for me to use with my lack of vision. I've seen a couple of apps that work while plugged into a laptop with WiFi capabilities, and then triggering remotely from the iPad or iPhone. Although the options available are nice, it doesn't really serve what I need.
I know with the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit, I can plug the camera directly in via the USB port, and the iPad will show you what's on the camera, giving you the option to transfer your photos. This is great, however, in my case, either something with a live video feed, or having one photo at a time displayed is really what I need.
Any suggestions? I thank you in advance for your help.

apple blocks and denies the possibility of using the ipad as a LIVE MONITOR, the only way around this is with wifi over a network, again privacy is invaded if so, using a direct link will require a jail broken ipad which is not supported around here, seek that info on a JB site
hi guys,
I just wanted to ask why you think Apple blocks this use of an iPad as an external monitor?
I make videos. I'm in the market for an external monitor, but I'm also in the market for a new smart phone and I was about to buy an iPad Mini too. I use Macs for editing and having everything one make and integrated just makes sense.
But now I'm forced to go buy an Android phone and/or PC based tablet because while you can't use i-products directly tethered to Canon cameras, you can with Android and PC.
It seems silly to me, especially seeing as it's a viable market for Apple to take advantage of. It's frustrating!
?????
thats apples loss
i just spent more money then the price of a decent ipad mini on a lilliput IPS monitor 7 inch field monitor,
Apple could certainly make allot of money just by un locking a simple feature the use of a field monitor with zebras, focus assistance is only a few apps away, both canon and panasonic already have apps to control their cameras, i do not see why apple cant do it, maybe its a security risk.
I was at a wedding last summer and this very same set up, the photographer was streaming a live feed of the wedding over the Internet.
I asked what he was doing and he explained the above.
I have now been looking to do the same think, that's how I came across this post.
I will contact the photographer from the wedding hopefully and if I get an answer worth posting I will do so... Until then... Good luck
☺
Thanks Incey, would love to hear your findings.
Hello,
I was wondering what you found out from that wedding photographer?
I am finishing my writer/director/DP demo reel and had this same issue!
Shooting with Canon DSLRs...
THANK YOU!!!

Sorry to relive this thread but I just found what you were looking for, it's Camranger, which consists of a wifi gadget + iPad app that goes by the same name: http://www.camranger.com they currently support most of Canon and Nikon DSLR setups.
PS: I am not affiliated with this company in any way, don't even own a DSLR, just sharing a tip on what I have just found out while looking for wireless video feeds to iPad/iPhone. Good luck!
Thank You!!!
Even if I cannot currently afford it, 'tis good to know the tech is out there...
Rock on!
Thanks again!

Hi!
I bought the Camranger a while ago ... from dealer here in Sweden. And have tried it with Nikon D800, D700 and D90.
I don't regret the purchuase, it works for anything. It is not thetering to the iPad/iPhone, nor computer (Although they now have an aplication for OSX ... havent tried it), in the sence that the pictures are stored on the iPad/iPhone or computer. But you will have a preview of the pictures you have shot. It works for video as well, but more like a remote controller than e perfect second screen ... There is a slight delay in teh video transfer and of course the quality of the video is not as if using HDMI. Still It is a very usefull piece of equipment for any Nikon/Canon DSLR photographer/videographer.

Nice...!
I am using Canon T3i and 60D...
I shoot film and photos everyday. No No joke. Not all are keepers of course
So, Thank You for your feedback on the Camranger...
Gotta see how much it would cost to get it before I leave for a shoot on August 7th...
Sincerely,
Johnlee
kiboko, Are you also saying that their's a delay in previewing an image just before you would shoot?
$300 is a bit steap. At that point I'd consider being tethered (as the OP requested) and just mount my ipad to my tripod if I found a great option to do so.
300 bucks is very steap, also note its the size of a hard drive and you would think it could of been one, wifi interfaces come in such small sizes these days, cameras are now availble with wifi and controls, its a shame the 70d came out now, its not full frame but not bad
I haven´t measured the delay. It was just a feeling I had when shooting video. While taking stills i did not notice any disturbance ...
But to be honest. I don't know how how long the delay is.
