Importing 1080 50i to Final Cut Pro X

Hi all,

I have just got Final Cut Pro X, hoping that as it support AVCHD this time it should be able to import video correctly from my Sony HDR-CX100. This camcorder is set to record in 1080 50i. I can see before the import is started that FCPX recognizes the clips as 1080 50i, but when the import is completed it becomes 25fps. Then when creating a project the only options for 1080i available appear to be 25i or 29.97i.

Is it not possible to import as 50i or 60i? I can say that 25i is not nice to watch, its like half the frames are missing, very choppy.

Hoping someone will be able to shed some light regarding this.

Many Thanks,

Marcus

Thanks Thierry. I looked at the file, and I don't see abnormal jittering. When the viewer in FCP is set to 100% and both fields are switched on, I see standard interlacing as I would except when her hand moves. When the image is scaled in the viewer, the interlacing gets chunky because it's multiplied, which is typical of interlaced media on a computer screen. If your video's destined for web delivery it's better to shoot a progressive format. Personally I like 720p, but I don't know if Sony does that. You might also try 1080p. For this media for delivery, what you can do is go to project properties (Cmd-J) and click the wrench to change the project to progressive. You won't get the interlacing, but you will get motion blur instead, which is genrally more acceptable for computer screen delivery, unless there's a ton of motion, which you don't seem to have here.

Thanks Tom... My video is for television so I need to shoot interlaced. I usually shoot in 1080 and then export the edit in 720 for sending FTP. In FCP X it doesn't give me the 720 option saying I have to use Compressor. I have an older version of Compressor and it doesn't seem to want to use it. So I'll have to get the newer version.

On the video I sent you. Her hand moving looks like motion blur, but the video is in 25i so there shouldn't be much blur.

Also, one point. There is often a little snap in the audio at the point of connection between two clips. In FCP 7 I used to just put in a little audio fade on every transition. But in FCP X I can't find an audio fade between two clips. So it takes longer to expand the audio out of the video, extend the audio both ways and manually create the fade. Just for future versions, might be nice to be able to throw in an audio fade as easily as in FCP 7.

Thanks again! Thierry

I view the media on my computer screen and send it via FTP to the television for broadcast. I had just never seen that effect before using FCP 7. Reading entries in the forum here, I saw that others had questions about that. I will check with the television to see if they were able to air it with no problem. I sent them a non compressed version as well on a USB stick. On that version, on the computer screen, I didn't see this effect. Nor did I see it on the original media when played back in FCP X. So, still a bit skeptical about it. But thanks for your input and time!

HI all, I posted the original question, and even though it was explained that 25i is the correct rate I can say that appearance when watching on computer or tv is as if one or several frames are missing. The quality was so bad no matter what tweaks or settings I used , the quality I got was simply not watchable. Not sure what the issue is but my Sony 50i hd cam simply can't be edited with FCP. I accepted defeat and got a Panasonic 50p camera instead, super smooth :)

Worth to note is that pre editing my 50i Sony footage when watched as raw avchd (not in FCP) was also very smooth, so something very destructive must happen when it's imported to FCP.

Marcus
