Safari won't let me open the bill pay section of my bank

I have tried to pay bills on line with two different banks. Neither one will allow me to open the 'BILL PAY' tab so I can do that. This just recently happened. I have been paying bills this way for over a year. Neither bank knows what the problem is.

Apple suggests I reset Safari...I am timid to do this cause i know it will erase stuff I think I need??!!!

Any thoughts?

Instead of resetting Safari, try this....

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies.

Delete all cookies related to the bank sites.

Now empty the Safari cache from the menu bar, Safari / Empty Cache.

Quit then relaunch Safari. Try one of the bank sites.

If that doesn't help, install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo

Then restart your Mac. Try again.

I have been having so much trouble viewing my complete utility bill. I thought it was because an .aspx file and wouldn't show or print on a mac. I could see a summary and usages and all other sorts of stuff but not the bill. So I just tried it on Safari. No problem. Thank you. It never occured to me that it was a browser issue. I have only had one other website that doesn't work properly on Firefox and use Safari for it. I will have to remember this.

Thank you babowa.

I could pay my electric bill, but not see all the details, just a summary. I emailed them and they told me to download Adobe Reader. Which I did not want to do and didn't understand why that would work any better. I hadI only started paying these bills online recently, so I still hadn't decided exactly what to do. In fact, I was thinking of posting here and asking about aspx files, because I had never heard of them. I think you are right that it is something that is specific to utilities so that they can do all the averaging and usaging and showing you temps and killowatts etc etc. What the bill did in Firefox was to download the file. When I try to open it , I get the message that it can't be opened by Preview or, which is stranger iPhoto opens and tells me it is an unreadable file. In safari I just got a new tab with the bill and printed it . Very strange.

so trying a different browser definitely would be worth checking into. Couldn't hurt.

Both banks said it had nothing to do with them..they had no answers at all....even tho I had been using Safari a long time to pay my bills.

I installed the OS update combo. It takes something like 2gb. I was wondering if I should delete it, or if it would be wise to go ahead and keep it. I didn't go thru it completely and read about it. That was foolish, but life is way too busy right now.

Thanks for your input.

Of course the banks will say that - their telephone people usually are not that knowledgeable about what their webmaster is doing. You have to remember that not everything is compatible with everything else: so, if one doesn't work, try another. Sometimes there is no explanation because the "offending" party doesn't even know what/how/why they did something.

As for the OS update: what are you on now? If it's working, you're fine. If you need the latest update and don't have it, install it. If you want to think about, keep it for a while until you make a decision.

I read thru the update and, quite frankly, don't know some of the terminology, so don't know how keeping this will be helpful. Not sure what to look for.

I did hear that Macs are now vulnerable to viruses since they are becoming more popular. Does anyone use a virus software that is safe and, hopefully, free???

There were two that were suggested I use, but during the download, the site asked for my password. I'm not sure which password, assume it is my administrative one. Is this safe to give to them?

1. There are no viruses for Mac. There is currently one trojan, but the latest security update from Apple is taking care of that. Additionally, you can take a look at these:

I do not have any anti virus software on my Mac; if there is ever a virus, I will use ClamXAV (free). Your computer's worst enemy is, frankly, the user who downloads things they don't know, possibly from questionable sites. Microsoft viruses can't do your Mac any harm since they can't read the Mac OS to do harm; however, you could unwittingly be forwarding one in an email to a PC friend. I don't forward attachments unless I know the source.

I'm having similar issues with my Mac ever since an update this spring. However, I'm still able to use my iPad and iPhone to access my credit union's bill pay site. But, it's a pain in the ........... and I don't want to have to download a whole new browser just to access the bill pay site.

I'm hoping their bill pay vendor will kindly acquiesce to supporting Safari again, so I don't have to use the wee little screen on my iPhone to complete my banking transactions.
