A driver appeared in Software Update again earlier this evening. I allowed Software Update to do the install.

It has not fixed the problem for me. The error message in tooltips says something that includes 'Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents/MacOS/rastertoescpll failed' .This probably means something to a geek, but doesn't help.

Isn't it great when an 'update' breaks something that was working just fine before?

Your 'solution' was not 'the' solution. I wonder whether you read the error message I included in my posting. It is not the same as the one cited in the Mac Fixit posting. The latter talked about the 'cups/backend/lpd'. My message quoted the error message that showed in the pinter application was entirefly different.

Furthermore I could see no error message being displayed in the Console messages that appeared to have any relevance to printing

Nevertheless, I did try restoring the backend folder (I could not be sure which file, if any, in there was the culprit). O the followed the remaining steps of repairing permissions and resetting the print system.

Result? Still can't print with the Epson RX 650.

For the time being I have a workaround using the Gutenprint driver for another Epson model with a slightly different number. That at least will get the epson to print.

Hello Colin. I too have tried various things suggested here to try fix this problem. None have worked.

Today I read the TidBits newsletter and they noted various problems with 10.6.8 such as ours, and also audio ones and another with the dock (which I experienced as well).

I fixed the dock problem by downloading an update to Parallels.

The folk at TidBits suggested that sometimes an effecitve solution to misbehaving updates is to download the 10.6.8 combo update.

I tried that, but I am sad to report it has not fixed our printing problem with the Epson RX650.

On a more positive note, I can tell you that an interim step you can take is to use the Gutenprint Driver. You do that by adding another printer, selecting the Stylus RX650 again, but selecting the Gutenprint drivers.

The list is very long and the RX650 is not specifically listed there, but I have been able to do basic text printing. I will experiment to see whether I get better results with other model numbers. I have not yet checked whether these driver will support the disc printing facility. I used to use that a lot and had printed hundreds of CDs. Luckily my clients no longer need files supplied on a CD and can get them online.

I do hope we get this mess-up fixed. The 650 is a great printer and I don't fancy having to replace it just becauase the driver and other OS components have been screwed.

Good luck.

Hi, seems like this update has broken a few printers, in my case an Epson RX640. Spent a couple of hours on this yesterday and found that the error is due to the new Epson update provide by Apple very recently. The latest driver versions 8.60 don't seem to work, tried replacing the ratertoescpll with a previous 8.50 version - problem still the same. In the end I restored the /library/printers/epson/inkjetprinter2/ directory from time machine and all files below that - so effectively removing the latest Apple Epson update for that printer. The printer now works without an issue. The directory/subdirectories in my case is /inkjetprinters2 , I do have an /inkjetprinters directory, but this seems to have really old drivers in (6.70). I have two epson printers, the RX640 is now working, the R2880 never seem to have an issue with the new drivers. It may be that the driver update only affect the older printers. Going to be cautious from now on regarding the Epson updates from Apple.
