Terribly slow AFP network performance.

I've got a 2009 mac mini and a new macbook pro both on snow leopard 10.6.8 on my local network at home. I enabled AFP on the mac mini to share files with the MBP. Performance is abyssmal so far. Transferring even a 2-3 MB file takes ages, and often times out and gives up. A 1MB file took nearly 5 minutes to transfer. Are there any other settings to tweak before I revert to sneakernet?

I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2011) 16 GB RAM connected to a very robust but old eternet network (LAN)

When reading files on the Server, JOBS Folder you literally can wait 2-3 minutes to read the contents of a folder. This is a SMB connection. Tried AFB, no help. I can read from a LaCie 2Big network drive, very fast response. Works resonable well in Finder, but from within any application the response is very slow. Looking at the PC next to me, blazingly fast in explorer. Literally an application (Acrobat, InDesign will 'Not Responding')

Any help appreciated.

The first step I would take (for both of you) is to remove the network as an issue. Do this by directly connecting the two machines via a known good ethernet cable (I presume a "crossover" cable won't be needed as these are modern machines). Make sure that when doing the test that the IP addressing scheme is consistent for both devices i.e. both on the same IP network, no Default Gateway (as the router won't be accessible this way) and no DNS server address.

When testing this way, if one machine cannot be found from the other by using its name, use the IP address instead, for example connect using afp://user:password@192.168.0.5 (or wharever the actual IP address is). For SMB, use smbfs://user:password@192.168.0.5.

Post back the outcome; if this fixes it, then there are network or router issues to deal with.
