I bought a C Crane WiFi internet radio and keep getting an error saying wrong password for the WEP/WPA password. I've tried to set it up under Apple Internet preferences, but it seems all screwed up. Any advice?

I'm trying to connect an internet radio (C Crane WiFi radio) to my Apple Express network. I tried setting the WPA password in Apple preferences, but it still won't accept my password. Plus, when I changed the password in preferences, it doesn't seem to accept my latest edit.

Any advice? The Crane guide indicated that the WEP/WPA was on the actual router (not true). I think it's what I set in the network preferences---right? I'm stumped.

The issue maybe that the Wi-Fi Radio is unable to use the WPA password itself and will require using the Equivalent Network Password instead.

To get this password, you will use the AirPort Utility from the MacBook:

  • Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort base station > Manual Setup
  • Now, before doing anything else, go up to the utility's menu bar the top of the screen, and then, choose "Base Station," and then, Equivalent Network Password from the drop-down menu. You will see two items: 1) WPA Password, which should look familiar to you, and 2) WPA Pre-Shared Key. It should be a long hexidecimal set of numbers and letters. Jot down this second item.
  • You will want to use the value you just jotted down when entering the password from the radio.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm still lost. I did what you said----I found no drop-down menu after clicking on base station. I did try clicking on Assist Me at the bottom. I tried that before---clicking on restore factory settings (erasing all old airport personal passwords). I did get all long string of alpha numerics and tried inputting that into the wifi radio. But it failed too---it said invalid password. I never found anything called Equivalent Network Password. Before, even tho I reset WPA and WEP passwords---none of it worked.

I really appreciate your input---any more ideas?

Thanks,

Laura

I still get no drop-down menu. I notice you have an Airport Extreme, could that be the problem? I have an older Express v. 6,3. I think it's from around 2005 or a little later. I looked it up and it should support compatibility with the b, g, n, etc. formats. What do you think?

Thanks again for your help. I suppose I'll try to make phone calls tomorrow. I've spent like 6 hours on this stupid thing.

Unfortunately, I don't have the older 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) around to verify that this menu option should not be available, but I know it is for both the 802.11n AirPort Express (AXn) and the Time Capsule (TC).

The earlier AX does NOT support 802.11n, only 802.11b & 802.11g on the 2.4 GHz radio band. It also does NOT support the 5 GHz band either.

Update for y'all reading this. I got it!

I went to Airport Utility-Base Station

Manual Reset

I reset my settings for WEP-128 bit, this time I input a password with all caps---but that's not the pw the radio took.

I went to Keychain Access under the Utilities apps.

Then I asked to see the password for my appropriate network.

Then I input that very long alpha-numeric number into the wifi radio.

(I'd done this before and it did not work---this time it did, for some pseudo-psycho-computer reason.)

Whew!

Thanks for the help---at least my brain started working again.
