Problem With DMG - Legacy Image Should Be Converted

I just had this happen when trying to install drivers for a usb audio card on 10.7 lion. Here's what I did to fix it.

1. Open Disk Utility.

2. Drag the DMG image onto Disk Utility. The area where it shows your harddrive/s.

3. Right click on the image in Disk Utility and select convert in the drop down menu. Choose where you want to save it and hit save.

It worked for me. Hope this helps.

as a developer, when faced with the decision to throw up an uncommunicative alert, and not do anything, or maybe LAUNCH Disk Utility, and do the conversion, and then open the resulting dmg, and THEN put up an alert that describes what just happened...

I'd think the latter would be more... Apple-like, and go that way.

First, thanks for the fix. It worked for me on Lion 10.7.2 exactly as described.

Second, I agree that would be more Mac-like, but considering the source of the file I had the problem with, I only expected a half-assed approach. But in fact the source of the alert is the built-in .dmg automounter, so it isn't really fair to blame the other developer for that. I blame Apple for not being Apple-like with this.

Absolutely - this is an Apple #Fail - if its a legacy .dmg, it can't be expected to know how to upgrade itself - its the mounter that should prompt to enter Disk Utility and fix the DMG.

And thanks for the hint - saved me buying the current version, which is what the developer wanted me to do (for something I already own!)

Thanks & TKS again. It worked like a bandit. I just upgraded to 10.7 lion and a few of my dmgs required upgrading, before they could be mounted. I thought all was lost. I had never encountered "legacy problems with dmgs before.

coincidentally, the 'legacy' problem was with a 2 year old Apple developed graphics program. Once the 'legacy' problem was fixed using the above instructions, the highly advanced software package worked perfectly. Why Apple stopped supporting it, in the first place, is a complete mystery. I am, however, very happy to have a functioning copy.
