Video Call on ichat

Iam currently having trouble making video calls to contacts on ichat.

I'm using my new macbook pro 2011, on snow leopard. My ichat account is on gmail. The video call button is greyed out. I have read else where that I can't video call people using ichat whilst im using gmail. Is this true? I have installed the video plug in from the google site and it hasn't helped. The people im trying to contact are using aol on ichat.

I also have tried making a new email so to use for ichat if it is true i cant video call from gmail. I made an account on aol earlier but can't connect to ichat, it will just say "connecting" for about 3 minutes then say it can't connect.

Thanks

Mac Pro

Hi,

I have seen this once before with an AIM name.

The person was getting messages that he could not Login to the AIM servers and was managing to Dismiss them and as a consquence he had loads of similarly named files in his Preferences Folder.

There should be only one.

It should get recreated as iChat starts up again.

DO this:-

Remove the Account in iChat

Quit iChat

Delete every .plist that starts com.apple.ichat.Jabber

Open iChat and recreate the account.

Okay, I have just deleted four files that system allows me, but these files cannot be deleted... What should I do? I haven't added my Google account yet on the iChat.

OK,

It sounds like you do not "Own" them.

Highlight each in turn and use the Finder's File Menu > Get Info (or the Keystrokes)

At the bottom of the Panel that appears you may be able to tell if your Own the file. (your name should appear in the List)

Use the Padlock to Unlock the settings

Use the cogwheel type icon below the list of names.

If your Account name appears Greyed Out (Highlight your name in the list first) when referring to Making you the Owner then you already are the Owner

Ok,

Lets open the Preferences Folder info panel.

Go back so you are in the Library then highlight the Preferences Folder and do a Get Info on that.

Do you Own this ?

Remember to unlock the padlock, highlight your name if it is in the list and use the Cogwheel icon to check that Making your the Owner is greyed out.

You May (Should) have an option to "Apply to Enclosed Items"

Use this.

If this account was Migrated to this computer or some of the info was migrated to this Mac User Account you may have to look and checking the Ownership of the Library itself (And it's Contents)

I did it, I own the Preferences folder and I did an option to "Apply to Enclosed Items". Then, some files are deleted automaticly, but some of them are still there and I cannot delete them. The same reason; "You have unknown access"

Hi,

That is strange that those remain files refuse to accept the changes of the contiaining folder.

IF you do a Get Info on those do you get an Option to Add yourself and then change the Owner to your self ?

Ok,

Can you move them to the Desktop ?

We can worry about deleting them later.

Hi,

I will have to ask someone who is more familiar with doing this sort of thing to come to this thread.

I know it is late where you are (it is nearly the time I shut down for the evening)

Hi,

Yes, it is 12:24 AM here. Now, I can't see the Finder folder... It's the new issue! :/ I think I am going to backup my files and recover my MacBook Pro.

Hi,

Understood.

I have just finished posting in an area called the Lounge whether Poster who are Level 6 and above can post.

There are some who are much more knowledgeable about this side of things than I am and I hope one will be here shortly.

HI,

I have had one reply.

It reads like this

Hi Ralph,

I took a quick look and from the screenshots he posted it looks to me like there is some VERY messed up stuff going on.

The only time I have seen the peculiar icons that are dotted lines enclosing blank space is when the files in question are damaged.

They used to turn up fairly regularly under certain circumstances involving Windows files "stuck" in Mac space (in those cases the only cure was to run a Windows damage repair utilitity while booted in Windows).

The files showing up as Unix Executables are probably also messed up. I suspect by now he has done the nuke and re-install and, provided he doesn't migrate everything back, including dubious files, that might indeed be the best solution.

Have you reinstalled ?
