Video Call on ichat

Iam currently having trouble making video calls to contacts on ichat.

I'm using my new macbook pro 2011, on snow leopard. My ichat account is on gmail. The video call button is greyed out. I have read else where that I can't video call people using ichat whilst im using gmail. Is this true? I have installed the video plug in from the google site and it hasn't helped. The people im trying to contact are using aol on ichat.

I also have tried making a new email so to use for ichat if it is true i cant video call from gmail. I made an account on aol earlier but can't connect to ichat, it will just say "connecting" for about 3 minutes then say it can't connect.

Thanks

Mac Pro

Hi again,

I reinstalled the Lion OS X, but the problem is still continuing. I have just checked the files again that you told me to look (Jabber.plist etc.), there is still the files that I can't delete...

Hi,

Can you create a new Mac User Account ?

This is done in System Preferences > Accounts (Up to Snow Leopard) or Users and Groups in Lion.

It can be an Admin or Standard account.

Once that is done set up iChat with the same Account/Screen name info you use in your Normal Mac User Account.

Do things work in this account ?

Hi,

I've just tried now and it's the same in the different account. I use my Gmail address on Windows Live Messenger too, may it cause that problem?

Hi,

In the normal run of things you "Own" and should have permission to Read and Write every file in every folder and subfolder with your Home folder (the one with the Little House icon in Hard Drive/Users)

If some were migrated to your Users Folder, such as dragging Pics form another computer, you may find that your do not own them and you cannot move them or edit them (without saving the name as something different.)

Everything in the Library/Preferences is "yours"

If you create a New Mac User then the preferences there are "Theirs" (even if you set it - think of it as another person).

Are you saying that iChat behaves the same way in the new Mac User Account ?

Or do you mean the .plists things are the same and Cannot be deleted from that (Mac) account ?

Can you tell me exactly how you reinstalled ?

Fresh Install and copying everything back to your Home Folder except the Preferences ?

Archive and Install option from the Install Disk ? (Actually Snow Leopard does it this way without asking you)

You Posted this pic.

One of My iChat .plists shows the Path to the File

The "Select New Original" button suggests your might be a broken Alias.

You also seem to post what look Like Spotlight Searches.

Normally you cannot search the Library in your Home Folder (and neither of the two on the System side)

Can you explain how you are doing this ?

I use the finder > Go Menu and hold down the ALT key to show th Library (of the Home Folder) in Lion

I can then navigate to the Preferences.

I get this window

Hi again,

I erased my disk and then installed the fresh Lion OS X. I created a new account and uploaded images. However, I cannot still use video chat. In a little while, I will upload the images from my regular account.

I am experiencing the same problem between 3 macbook pro...

A :Macbook pro 2011+ Lion

B: Macbook pro 2006 -17 inch + snow leopard

C :Macbook pro 2005 -15 inch + snow leopard

Impossible to make video conf call with AIMs accounts between

A<->B

B<->C

A<->C

And I do not think it is an issue with permission or accounts. these macbooks have differents users.

And a message on my macbook pro 2011 let me know : "this computer does not support video chats" ... funny , specially when facetime uses perfectly the camera.

So Ichat Video does not work but FaceTime works ...

Hi,

If you had navigated to the /Home Folder/Library/Preferences you will have seen that it contains the ByHost folder and that some .plists do "appear" to be repeated in there.

So...

Erasing the whole disk/Drive would had deleted those .plists 😉

You say you now appear to Own them and they don't seem to be duplicating themselves like they were before.

However both your regular account and the Test Mac User Account still can't Video in iChat using your Google ID.

You have said that the Buddy is using a Mac and iChat with their own Google ID

You had previously checked that the Video Chat And Audio Chat items (Video Menu) were ticked/enabled as were the Show Status items in the View Menu.

You had previously posted a Picture that show s the Connection Doctor has no problems with the Internet Speed (and what iChat is supposedly can do).

AS we can assume now that it is not the .plists we have to consider the Firewall on the Mac

System Preferences > Security > Firewall.

If Off then the issue moves to the router.

If On open the Advancedd Button

In this pane the "Allow Signed Software" item needs to be ticked/Enabled and iChat and IMAgent need to be in the list
Stealth should NOT be ON.

This block Pings coming to the computer (usually on the LAN Side) being reponded to. If you tried pinging the IP the computer has from another computer at your Home (or office) the Mac would not respond.

However iChat Sends a Ping during the Connection Process to confirm that the IP that is responding to your Visible Invite is where you sent the visible Invite to.

If Stealth is Off then we need to check the Routing device you have.

Router

You should be able to access this with a Web Browser.

Using UPnP will open the ports iChat needs (the app tells the router when it needs them and they close after a period of non use)

The router may have other 'features' such as Ping Blocking that need turning Off.

Some Firewalls on routers can be an issue.

It may pay to tell us what make and model you have and what has been done to set it up for iChat.

(devices are so varied that it can take a long time to describe them all).

HI,

As FaceTime works it suggests at first glance that any Firewall or port opening issues with the router would be sorted.

Apple Info on FaceTime ports

Apple info on the iChat 3 range of ports

You will see that many of the iChat and FaceTime ports overlap.

iChat 3 had a "Group of 20" ports (16384-16403) that were suggested. iChat 4 and later only use a "group of 10" (16939-16402) which would seem to "leave room" for FaceTime.

Some of the ports needed are in fact the same (it's where Apple put the Video/Audio Streaming stuff)

the FaceTime ports included this group (3478 through 3497 (UDP)) that iChat does not.

This small group and the 5223 are used during the login process.

I have not spent as much time checking which ports and when (with Little Snitch) FaceTime uses when making a Connection.

Not is there a Log created on failed connection in FaceTime to see if a PING is sent.

I would check that the Mac Firewall's do not have the Stealth option Enabled (it blocks responses to PINGs)

It would check the routing devices involved are not blocking PINGS.

Some hints:-

Netgears have it in the WAN Set up Page.

Linksys devices have it on the Security page and "Anonymous Requests on the WAN port" (here port is the physical cable and socket point on the device).

Netopia have it as part of the Firewall.

Basically it can be anywhere.

I don't understand here. Will I delete ByHost folder only or erase disk again and install new fresh Lion OS X?

Jan 22, 2012 4:46 AM in response to Community User

Hi,

I was originally suggesting that you cuased a refresh of your Login by deleting the com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist

You found you did not Own them and could not delete them.

Although extreme erasing the whole disk means you have created new ones (you deleted the old ones - And then some !!) when iChat was restarted afterwards.

The fact that it still does not work in the Test Mac User Account or your Regular Mac User Account points to an issue outside of iChat...

Namely the Mac Firewall or the router would be the next most most likely candidates.
