Apps on an iPod touch, First Generation?

I recently lost my ipod touch fourth gen and i've always texted off ipods. I can't get a new ipod for a while and somebody gave me an ipod touch first gen, and now i can't put apps on it. Does anybody know how to do it? I know you're supposed to download software from apple.com for 9.99, but i can't find anything on any of the ipod touches that aren't fourth generation. Please, please help. Should i just jailbreak my ipod instead?
