SONY HVR-Z7U is Compatible with FCP X

I've seen compatibility questions raised about a several cameras. I thought I'd just report that FCP X has no problem importing native directly from the HVR-Z7U's tape or its card based recorder, the HVR-MRC1. No transcoding needed, but it might be recommended in some situations.

As Apple said, if it has Firewire, it should work. It also has HDMI output, but my Mac Pro doesn't.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

Hello Matt,

I spoke with the sony techs several times over the last months.

1. The plugin does not exist; however, they keep telling me that sony is working on it.

2. They finally walked me through on how to view my footage on the HVR-MRC1 and import it, but it runs at the same speed as if I were viewing a tape. In other words we cannot plugin the cards into a reader and have them download instantly.

Here are the instructions on how to get your FCPX to import.

1. connect the caddy to your computer via a firewire

2. attach the MRC1 and battery to the caddy

3. click the "menu" button on your MRC1 make sure it is on "HDV"

4. you may need to click on the "cam link" button (on your MRC1) to ensure you are viewing the "CF" to computer connection/link.

5. Open your FCPX and go to file>new event

6. You should then see "import files" and "import from camera"

7. Click on the "import from camera" a window will open showing your cameras and hard drives.

8. you may need to click the play button on the MRC1 to get it to play

9. click play and then click import

For the amount of money spent on this product you would think they would have rolled out the plugin by now.

Frustrating.

If the trouble is persistant you can always do a transcode with an open source freeware program called mpeg streamclip. There have beeen times when the Sony MCR1 has a break in timecode when I disable the camlink and capture is aborted or a partial clip. Mpeg streamclip will see this and give you an option to fix timecode. Be aware if you are syncingg an outside audio source because the break may still exist and you will have a place where the audio will need to be split and resynced at the juncture of the break. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

Just an update, I haven't heard anything from Sony on this. I called last year and they said they're "working on it" but obviously, it's not a priority for them.If there was a solution to this problem, it would be on here.

CURRENT STATUS

You CANNOT log and transfer footage from the MRC1's CF cards in the background but you CAN import footage from the cards in real time (just like a tape...)
