will apple's usb modem work with Lion

I don't care so much about whether it will work for faxing. Well, I care a little. But mostly, I use the usb modem for communicating with a bulletin board. You probably think this must be so old-fashioned that why should Apple care. Well, I'm talking about the U.S. government. I submit claims to Medicare, Medicare requires electronic transmission, and the only way you can submit without paying a third party is through a bulletin board accessible only via a data modem. Is Apple saying that health care isn't that important? Just kidding, but what's the answer: Will the Apple USB modem work with Apple's own system?

I regret not seeing your great fix before - “more mistakes are made by not looking than not knowing”. Couldn’t get it to work initially but I found using a USRobotics modem is a little bit more complicated. It goes:

  1. Print
  2. Select USB modem as print device
  3. Go to Fax Information and put in the recipients fax number and prefix but don’t press FAX.
  4. Go back to copies and pages, fill in as appropriate and press FAX on this page.

ps Previously contacted USRobotics, they had never heard of the problem but quick to add not a modem problem

Just as well we have threads like this! Thanks

I have now received my Zoom modem.

This modem does not seem to be plug and play. First you should delete the old Apple modem. After plugging the modem, you should then set it up as if you were going to use it as a dial up networking modem in Network Preferences. Highlight USB modem. You have to give it new new name (say USB Modem 2) and in the advanced tab you have to add (or change) the make to Zoom, select type as generic 115K and fill in the country you are in, to pick up the correct dial tone. Then check to see if it has added as a fax modem in the Fax and Printers section of System Preferences. If it has not add it (USB Modem not Bluetooth DUN).

I copied these reccs from one other post and will confirm that this works in OS x Iion with a Zoom 3095 modem. just hooked it up and works great.

Apple, come on!!!! I just spent a couple hours working on this to find out that you arbitrally decided to stop supporting one of your own pieces of hardware. I do not send faxes often but when I do, I have to do it quickly. I feel like I should charge you for the hours just spent and ask for a refund for the modem I purchase in good faith. I buy “Apple” because I figure you will support “Apple”. Apparently we all are morons in your opinion for doing so!

The list of Apple hardware that it no longer supports is long. I'm sure that to Apple the decision to stop supporting that modem wasn't arbitrary but was based on an economic analysis that concluded that continuing to support a device that Apple apparently hasn't sold for a while didn't make sense. Why don't you just buy one of the other inexpensive modems mentioned in this thread and get on with your life?
