How can I sort songs alphabetically in iTunes?

It started with iPad and iPod-- suddenly I couldn't sort all songs a to z. They were sorted by group, then by song name. Now in iTunes its the same problem. How do I sort by song name only?

Currently I have iTunes 11.1.5.5. This is how I solved the problem of sorting the songs alphabetically.

1. OPEN iTunes.

2. IF the left hand Sidebar is not showing,

THEN in the "View" menu, SELECT "Show Sidebar."

3. In the left hand sidebar, under "LIBRARY," CLICK on "Music."

4. In the right pane (the main view), your music will now be displayed in whatever manner you last left it.

CLICK on the "Songs" tab along the top of the window and you should now see your music/songs are

displayed in a list format.

NOTE: You can have different columns displayed depending on your personal choice. I have Name, Kind, Date Added, Time, Artist, Album by Artist, and Genre set up as my personal choices.

5. ENSURE "Name" is one of your columns in order to perform the following steps.

6. RIGHT CLICK on any music/song and SELECT "Get info."

7. A pop up window appears, SELECT "Sorting" tab and two columns of information fields appear.

8. The right hand column shows all the sorting fields.

(a) FILL in these fields in the manner you wish your

music/songs to be sorted.

(b) IF you would like your music/songs to be sorted by song name,

THEN in the "Sort Name" field, ENTER the title of your song.

9. REPEAT step 8 for all the music in your library if these fields have not already been autofilled by iTunes.

NOTE: Start with a small playlist of music so you can see how this works before tackling your entire music library. With the pop up window still open, you can select the "Next" button at the bottom of the window to cycle to the next music/song in your playlist and repeat filling in the sorting fields. The changes in your smaller playlist will carry over into your main library.

10. When you have completed filling in the sorting fields for your music, at the bottom right of the sorting

pop up window, CLICK "OK."

11. You should now be able to CLICK on the "Name" column in the main window and your music/songs
will sort according to how you filled in the "Sorting Name" field.

I hope these instructions help. Feel free to edit these instructions if they are not clear or if I have missed a step.

Suddenly, my arrow pointing up will not work at all. My songs are listed from Z to A (z-to-a). I can not click the down arrow to make it point up to sort songs A to Z (a-to-z) . iPod nano 5th gen and itunes 11 on a mac. It used to work instantly. Now, no response at all when clicking the arrow to change order. It's so annoying. Any advice?
