Darwin launches after 10.4.4 on startup...

After running 10.4.4 software update, iMac 400 goes through normal startup and immediately after progress bar completes, Darwin launches and asks for login. I login and Mac GUI launches for account login, I login and then Darwin lauches again and asks for login. I login on Darwin again and then Darwin stays and waits for a command. I'm trying to find out what to do to get the the Mac GUI and get my computer working again. I'm stuck on Darwin. Any advice?

From your description, it sounds like there is a problem in launching the GUI login window. If this is the case, it could be due to some problem with a system file or perhaps even a corrupted preference file.

The 1st thing that I suggest you do is to boot off your install CD and use Disk Utility to repair the disk. There are instructions for this at Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. See the section on Repair Disk.

If that does not help, I think that there are two directions to go. One would be to do a re-install of Tiger via Archive and Install. Then, do the 10.4.4 upgrade again. The other route is to try to figure out what is going wrong and this probably involves starting up in Single-User mode and poking around to look at various logs to find an error message. If there was success in finding an error, you might be able to fix the problem. If you want to try this route, say the word and I can give some suggestions.

I finally tired of trying to command Darwin to give me the Mac GUI (exit command only took me back to single-user login, which after logging in took me right back to Darwin login). I tried booting off Tiger Install DVD and ran Disk Utility (found NOTHING wrong... including permissions). Finally gave up and reinstalled Tiger (archive and install option) and then ran 10.4.4 Combo update. Works fine now. I lost nothing but time. I recommend anyone with this problem to save yourself a bunch of headaches and time trying to troubleshoot this problem and just go straight to a reinstall of Tiger and then the 10.4.4 Combo update. Be sure you have enough HD space to adequately download and perform the install before you begin.

You will laugh about this one day, I promise. I know I didn't at the time though. We all have an account name, mine is my name yours might be something else. But when it says "Welcome to Darwin!" then you wait a few secs and then it says "login:" and you type in your ACCOUNT NAME. Then press enter. Then it will say "password" then type in your ACCOUNT PASSWORD. What ***** about this whole thing is that some people forget their user name because most people don't have to log in especially if they are a single user on the computer. Anyhow, do that then press ENTER after you enter the password. THEN! Now wait, it gets good right here. type in "logout" exactly like that without the quotations then press ENTER! Then it should take you back to Tiger... GOOOOOOD LUCK! That Darwin was my PowerBook Jaguar Life Story!

Ruben et al:

No one has a clue about Darwin/BSD, if they do they are not telling. I had the same issue several months ago, so it does not have to do with the latest update. It was 10.2.2. Here is the account of my saga: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1047613&#1047613

If wish there were some other way, and maybe there is.

Good luck.

Here is a response from the Unix Forum
Your machine is having trouble. Read the messages on the screen for some hints.

Tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM on restart it goes back to the same place.

Until you solve the underlying problem, this will be the case. It's unlikely to be a PRAM problem that is causing this. It's far more likely to be a disk-related one. If that's the case (the messages on screen should imply this), you need to run some basic disk repair utilities to get your system back up and running. After rebooting, and assuming there's some message regarding a disk-related error, try the following:

fsck -y

to check the disks, then:

/sbin/mount -uw /

to mount the drive, then run:

/usr/sbin/diskutil repairpermissions /

Incidentally, 'Darwin' is the name Apple chose for the Unix core at the heart of Mac OS X, akin to Sun's Solaris, IBM's, AIX, and more.

Hi
I think you received excellent advice from Rich JG, you would of had to
have read thru, it was heading to reinstall, as a last resort, someone said no one knows any thing about Darwin, well its unix , it osx.
All comes down to good manitanice, and how do you forget (Milah) the computer loggin even in atuomatic log in i do not know, write it down !

Finally gave up and reinstalled Tiger (archive and install option) and then ran 10.4.4 Combo update. Works fine now. I lost nothing but time.

Not reading thru help offered will do that and not even a thank you to those who help is just not gracious. BWT you forget to mention to run permissions repair before & after the update.
Thanks for your time.
