Your machine is having trouble. Read the messages on the screen for some hints.
Tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM on restart it goes back to the same place.
Until you solve the underlying problem, this will be the case. It's unlikely to be a PRAM problem that is causing this. It's far more likely to be a disk-related one. If that's the case (the messages on screen should imply this), you need to run some basic disk repair utilities to get your system back up and running. After rebooting, and assuming there's some message regarding a disk-related error, try the following:
fsck -y
to check the disks, then:
/sbin/mount -uw /
to mount the drive, then run:
/usr/sbin/diskutil repairpermissions /
Incidentally, 'Darwin' is the name Apple chose for the Unix core at the heart of Mac OS X, akin to Sun's Solaris, IBM's, AIX, and more.
Finally gave up and reinstalled Tiger (archive and install option) and then ran 10.4.4 Combo update. Works fine now. I lost nothing but time.
