Help connecting ATV to my set-up

Hi all. I've been searching everywhere for help connecting my components together to our big screen. We have a HD DVR and PS3 that have been working through a Yamaha Receiver HTR- 6230 and then to our Sony TV that has one HD input.

I'm adding an AppleTV2 to the mix. I do have a Monoprice switch box HDX-501, and can use it if need be.

I've tried every connection possible except the right one to get all of this working with the right set-up and inputs. I've changed it so much that now nothing works.

Oh the joys of HDMI.

I'd unplug everything and connect it all up the way you had it before you got the Apple TV to begin with. Now before trying to add the Apple TV, do you have a spare HDMI port on your receiver.

Thanks for the welcome. There are two inputs on the receiver, one labeled DVD and one for CBL. There's one out port. Everything is unplugged now and I am trying everything.

You don't necessarily need to use the input ports on the receiver for the purposes they are labelled.

You will need to decide whether you are going to use a switch to switch between devices connected to the receiver or to switch between the receiver and another device connected to the TV.

Before deciding anything though check that the Apple TV will work with the switch and the receiver by testing with the simplest configurations.

At this point I would set it up any way possible! I have tried the Atv into the receiver and it worked. The one connection that seems to be troublesome is the receiver out to the tv. I do have the switcher I mentioned. What do you think is the best way to set it all up?

It's difficult to say without being able to test things myself. However if you switch between two devices before they enter the receiver, all devices will be able to output Dolby Digital via the receiver, setting it up the other way would mean one devices Dolby Digitals abilities would be lost.

As to which devices would be switched and which one would go straight into the receiver, I'd choose the one I use most to go into the receiver. Of course what is preferable may not be what works.

So the components like the PS3, ATV2, and my DVR would all go into the switch box? And the switch box out goes into the receiver? And the receiver out goes to the tv?

Yes, if the switch works with all the devices.

You may need to have the TV on and the switch set to a particular device before you turn that device on (ie the device may need to see/sense the TV before it will switch on)

The preferable solution would be to have all the devices connected to the HDMI inputs on the receiver (at least 2 of them would need to go through the switch) and then an HDMI cable connected to the TV and the output from the receiver.

Either of these options are something along the lines you should be looking at, depending on preference and how many ports you have on your switch and whether the components work with each other in these configurations.

One thing before I try that: right now the DVR is connected to the receiver, the receiver is connected to the TV. And all I get is a black screen with the Video 7 input showing at the top left. I don't know if it's a problem between my receiver and TV connecting properly.

Are all the input settings for both the receiver and the TV set correctly. You need to set the TV to use the port which the receiver is plugged into, similarly you also need to set the receiver to use the port that the DVR is plugged into.

Yes. Input on the tv is turned to 7 which matches the only hd slot on the tv. The receiver is tunes to input: CBL which is the slot that the DVR is plugged into.

Your receiver may also have different outputs and you may need to ensure you have the correct output selected. It might also be the case that your DVR is the same.
