MacBook Pro (i7 15" mid 2010) random black screen crash - any ideas?

Basically regardless of what I'm doing screen goes black and the machine dies. I have to reset via the power button. It happens randomly although is more likely when doing heavy work. It has happened on both Windows & Mac. Service guys said it's passed all the hardware checks and put it down to bad software. I've reinstalled 10.6.3 that came with it and since upgrading to 10.6.8 the problem has started up again.

I currently am experiencing the exact same problem and the exact same computer. Some of the threads are claiming its software but ive booted with a bare bones system and its still doing it. The only consistent way I get it to choke it by playing a .avi file with an external monitor plugged in however the first time it happened I wasn't using a monitor and it would do it during a defrag. Im probably going to have to go see the "genius's" as I did see one person say that ultimately was an issue with the logic board.

Jul 14, 2011 8:06 AM in response to reavra

same here, i have a mbp 6.2 (mid 2010)

screen fades randomly to black and the sound loops. i have to shut down & restart the mbp.

its very frustrating cause its happening really randomly, in adobe programs, while surfing... and everytime i get scared!! in one second you work really concentrated in projects and in the next you sit infront of an black screen!!! i think the geforce 330M GT cause the problem?! anybody know the costs to solve this problem? Unfortunately, the warranty is expired recently...

^^ posted this in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2707469?answerId=15617336022#15617336022

try this, since i changed to onboard-gfx (integrated) no kernel panic:

The only option you have is to download and install gfxCardStatus and set it on "Integrated Only" so your computer won't use the nVidia card anymore. (posted by JoeBobstah)

my kernel panic looks same like yours (NVRM[0/1:0:0]), so it seems that its definitly a hardware caused problem (Geforce GT 330M + Logic Board). apple have to solve/repair this!! we've paid about 2000€ for this waste ONE YEAR AGO!!

I think I'll give this 'turning off the NVidia' a try and see how it goes... I think I could live without it.

I just took a video of the machine dying and crashing. I will go back into the service guys again... show them it and tell them to please replace the graphics card/logic board on it. The issue I had previously was trying to explain to the service guys what was actually happening. They look at you like you're imagining things....

Despite my protests all they did was reinstall install the boot camp drivers (*sigh), told me it was working much better and handed it back to me only for it to die 5 minutes into use. Maybe I can convince them this time so I don't feel like I'm talking to a wall. I get frustrated that there appears there's nobody to contact at Apple directly.

Isn't there a moderator or somebody at Apple that could read this and other threads exactly like it - it's clear that many of the machines they shipped last year have faulty hardware.

Exactly same symptom here.

my log is very similar to you:

"

Fri Jul 22 19:24:12 2011

panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9d4c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xc0000000 0xa75c6000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P2/4

"

My mac is mbp 6,2 (mid2010 mbp 15") and no other H/W is changed except to RAM.

I think this is related with recent update.

I think I solve this issue of "NVRM Read Error".

I created an standard account and logged in with the account.

I found with this account it worked fine.

So I thought this issue must have relation with the S/W, not H/W.

And I stopped the gfxCardStatus and ran Safari, Flashes, and Played avi files and no pannic happened.

If the panic with "NVRM read error" occurs, stop any S/W that controls video card such as gfxCardStatus could be the solution

Update to this... After showing the video the service people ordered a replacement logic board. Since then no problems and all seems to be working = happy days! (I'll still keep my ole trusty dell at hand just in case)

This particular issue is immensely frustrating. I never got around to trying the gfsCardStatus option but replacing the hardware seems to be required for this problem.

MacBook Pro (i7 15" mid 2010) random black screen crash - any ideas?
