MacBook Pro (i7 15" mid 2010) random black screen crash - any ideas?

Basically regardless of what I'm doing screen goes black and the machine dies. I have to reset via the power button. It happens randomly although is more likely when doing heavy work. It has happened on both Windows & Mac. Service guys said it's passed all the hardware checks and put it down to bad software. I've reinstalled 10.6.3 that came with it and since upgrading to 10.6.8 the problem has started up again.

After fighting with this issue, I managed to find the replication for me.

STEP 1. Create A Standard Account for test.

STEP 2. Connect a external display

STEP 3. Log in with the test account

STEP 4. Open Safari, and play a flash movie within the Safari (such as CNN news)

STEP 5. Open MS Powerpoint for mac

I don't know if this works for others, but this works for me: Could see the black screen caused from NVRM Read error

I'll show this to the Apple staffs tomorrow.

I hope this could be helpful to others who have struggle with this issue.

First and foremost, what did you have the Genius do, what steps were taken to determine that they would replace the logic board? This is paramount to having it done for others or it will be an uphill battle for each user at each Genius bar.

I can replicate this symptom by opening an app using the integrated card and forcing it to change to the discreet by causing a more graphics instensive operation, tripping the panic/causing the unresponsiveness and screen blacking.

I should note that this has happened both on Snow Leopard and Lion, so it is OS independant.

I had the black screen issue with my 2007 Macbook pro 15", no warranty left. Brought it into Genius Bar and they said it is the graphics card on the logic board. Because there have been too high a percentage of these failing, Apple has told the company they have to replace free of charge. It would have cost me £600, according to my receipt.

I spoke with AppleCare and have been working through my hardware issue with the screen going black... He stated it's a software problem after I sent him some logs.

I have been having a kernel panic report being generated every time the Mac switched to nvida. He got me to partition my hard drive and install a non updated version of 10.6.3 the disk that come with the mac and run my programs from that.

As he suspected the system has been running flat out on various 3d games without crashing once. The engineers at apple are looking over my system at the moment and am expecting an update on it in the next couple of days.

I suggest trying this if you can bare to run in the old os... Just make sure you do not upgrade it as the latest set of drivers in SL cause the same issue

Rule of thumb: Don't buy top of the range MBP. This is a pain in the ***.

TBH even with a replaced board in these affected machines, they only work well for a while and then start to experience erratic slowness/freezing. It gets worse with time. Then they eventually die.

I've never ever been really able to use this machine for professional works. It was also never really capable of running Windows under Boot Camp with these problems either. I had greater success running Windows under Parallels as the VM was actually faster.

But alas after quite a turbulent year with that machine, it's tanked once more.
