Why won't iPad 2 recognize the SD card reader?
Just bought iPad2 and the camera connection kit. The Pad will not do anything....nothing...does not recognize the SD card reader when plugged into the slot? Is there a patch/fix for this issue?

Have you got a card in the SD reader ? Also the card needs to have a DCIM directory off its root, with the photos underneath it with filenames of exactly 8 characters (no spaces) plus their fil extension - which should be how they are if a camera put the photos on the card as opposed to you doing it via your computer.
I'm not aware of any fix to it as I'm not aware of there being a problem - but have you got the latest iOS version on your iPad (4.3.3) ?
I've tried using a USB powered card reader & a AC hub powered card reader & neither would work. Thought that might be a solution for people whose cameras do not use a SD card.
Cheers, Tom 😉
Thank you for a good advice on simply creating DCIM folder on the SD Memory Card.
That was a good start, but nobody seems to be addressing the transfer of the Video Movie files from iMovie Project (edited) Library into the iPad via the SD Memory Card with the SD Memory Card Apple SD Card Reader from the Apple Kit.
Here is my proposal of an Algorithm to convey such a transfer:
TRANSFERING VIDEO FILE FROM YOUR iMovie Project Library into your iPad PHOTO FOLDER LIBRARY VIA THE SD MEMORY CARD AND WITH THE APPLE SD MEMORY CARD READER FOR iPad:
1) EXPORT selected movie file ("Name1234.MOV" format) from the iMovie Application Project Library to the SD Memory Card connected via USB with your Apple computer through any kind of a Memory Card Reader. Make sure that within the Export Options you choose the format acceptable for iPad (Max: 1028 x720 HD resolution) and name the file with 8 characters name format.
2) Move the exported .MOV file into the DCIM Folder on your formatted SD Card. You need to create such Folder if the freshly formatted Card does not have any folders on it.
3) Eject the SD Card from your Computer and physically remove it from the reader connected to your computer via USB port.
Wait approximately 30 seconds and insert the SD Card back to the same Memory Card Reader connected to your computer.
4) Import the .MOV video file or multiple files (if you exported from the iMovie App more then one video file) into the iPhoto App Library.
5) Export these freshly imported and reformatted by the iPhoto App .MOV video files back to the SD Memory Card
6) Move (Copy) the files exported from iPhoto App to the SD Card into the DCIM Folder on the SD Card.
7) Eject SD Memory Card from your computer.
8) Remove the SD Memory Card from the Reader connected to your computer via USB port and insert it into the Apple SD Memory Card from the iPad accessory Kit SD Memory Card Reader.
9) Connect the Apple SD Memory Card Reader into your iPad.
10) Now, the iPad should recognize the Apple SD Memory Card Reader and open the PHOTO Application Folder with the CAMERA TAB on the very right of the Tabs Heather row.
11) The video .MOV files should show in that folder on the iPad screen ready to IMPORT
12) Select the files you want to IMPORT or select the IMPORT ALL option.
13) Wait till IMPORT process will end.
14) Open any other TAB in the PHOTO App folder on your iPad ('Photos' tab or 'Events' tab, or 'Albums' tab)
15) Touch the video file thumbnail to Play it on the iPad
Voilà! It worked for me, thank you very much. ... ;-) ...
Hi, just bought this connection KIT for my IPad2 / OS5.1.1 newest review , doesn't work can't download anything from
SD card / Canon with DCIM and even from my IPhone4 .
The photo App wich is supposed to pop up when you plug in the external cam or SD , does not run and don't give any option to download.
Press the Connection Kit more firmly into the iPad. That's what worked for me. (See my previous posting)
Sometimes rebooting the iPad is also necessary.
Thank Dean, i already tried that as you mentionned.
The card reader is actually recognized as an Apple device
Which I can see in config menu, but doesn't run any functionnal transfer.
Apple just suggest to return the CCKit back.
Thanks Penguin, that fixed my problem. Exactly spot on advice! Nick - Somewhere on the Great Barrier Reef 8^)
This worked for me on my iPad and iPhone.
