Scrambled screen

Ever since I've upgraded to OS X 10.6.8 I've been getting a scrambled screen and the Macbook Pro freezes.

I am not sure but it might be happening when I move- like across the room with the Macbook on. No, sudden movement or anything dramatic. But still this seems to happen. Take a look at the picture. I have to re-boot by pressing on the start key. What could be wrong. Are there any easy fixes or do I have to go to Apple Care?

Looks like a hardware issue to me, which means getting AppleCare involved. If you can, you could try running Apple Hardware Test to see what it finds, but even if it finds nothing I'd still call. Of course, if it does find something, write down the error code it gives you, and it should make the call really easy... no being told to try reinstalling the system first, etc.

It's been a struggle. Applecare have not figured out the issue. They are thinking of replacing the display. While they wait for the part to be delivered I have got the Macbook back home.

i've figured that if I hold the laptop in my left hand - thumb next to the keyboard 'Shift' button and the palm below the body- this problem occurs. Will tell Applecare about it.

Anyone else face this issue? It's not like anything is loose or anything. Everything feels rock solid but somehow if I hold the laptop in my left hand it freezes up.

As you've discovered, it's not a good idea to hold a notebook by the edge with one hand. It puts a lot of twist/torque on the case, and with the extremely tight tolerances inside, can cause issues. Whether that issue is a bad connection becoming separated with the bending/twisting, or something short circuiting is not possible to determine at this point.

How else will you hold the laptop if not from the edges. The only way to securely hold it is to have your plans under it and your thumbs above. It's not like I am doing anything complicated or major gymnastics. Just sitting down and while doing that making sure the Macbook is securely held. Doesn't say much for the aluminum body, does it?

Always two handed.

The edgeS (plural), with two hands, is the way to hold it.

One hand on one edge is not good, but obviously you may treat your MBP the way you want to.

And I don't need to "defend" the "aluminum body," it is what it is. It is not a tank. It is a fine piece of design which is not intended for rugged use.

The Nightmare continues. After the logic board was replaced Airport has started acting strange. On booting up it works for about 5 minutes and then stops working. Switching off the Airport leads to it being switched off permanently and it won't turn on again. On rebooting from here I get a message Airport card not installed. After rebooting several times the Airport shows up and connects to the wifi, works for about 5 minutes and then goes off again. Going batty because the Apple care guys can't figure our what is happening.

That's gotta be frustrating. I would definitely take it back to Apple, again and again as needed. At some point I would ask that they exchange your MBP for a new one if they cannot fix it. Some people believe that three is the magic number or repairs, but I think it's a case by case thing, and a lot depends on the issue/s, the person/s you're dealing with, and your attitude when you communicate with them (IMO, angry demands rarely get anywhere with anyone). ymmv

Not angry. Infact I was joking with the guys there. I've spent so much time there over the last couple of weeks that they should give me a job and pay me for being the smiling guy at the reception.

😉

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were angry. Just saying if you get to the point of asking for a replacement . . . .
