my iPhone 4 rings but there is no sound for text phone only vibrates. I have selected a sound under settings, sounds, text tone and I have rebooted the phone.

Is your phone on mute? Look on the side of your phone. Does it have an orange line next to the mute switch? If so, push the switch to take it off mute.
No my phone is not on mute as I said it is ringing for calls but only vibrating for texts. I hope the solution is not the dreaded "restore"!
Probably it is, but there is no reason to dread a restore from backup.
I have been told that restoring from a backup can just recreate the problem. If it is some kind of bug it may be in the backup also?
If it was another app in on your iPhone it would have become apparent immediately after you installed that app. Was there an app you installed that did this?
You can also Restore the phone as a new phone if the Restore from Backup does not work. Or you can skip all of this and just have it serviced. Make sure you back it up first.
