Just an update to my previous posting, shortly after posting I found a program syncios that according to their FAQ's "Syncios Software supports all iPod, iPad and iPhone models including: iPod Classic; iPod mini; iPod 4G; iPod nano; iPod nano 3; iPod nano 4G; iPod nano 5G; iPod nano 6G; iPod touch; iPod touch 4; iPod shuffle; iPod shuffle2; iPhone; iPhone 3G; iPhone 3GS; iPhone 4; iPhone 4S; iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C; iPad; iPad 2; the new iPad; iPad Mini; iPad 4, iPad Air." Mine is an iPod Touch.

It was easy to download and install and at first looked like it was my solution. It appeared to sync up everthing between my old iPod and new iPad including contacts. Other transfers (music, pictures, etc) worked fine but when I tried to transfer the contacts, it would take awhile and then just hang and eventually present a "stopped working" message. I emailed Syncios support on Dec 29, received a prompt reply asking me to send a copy of the program's log file which I did immediately. They immediately responded again with "We have submitted your problem to our R&D Department. We will try our best to solve the problem as soon as possible." Since there was a person's name attached to the emails, I presume it was a personal response and not an automated one. That was Dec 30 and I have heard nothing back since. It was a "free" download so I guess I can't expect much support. So that was my last option I think so I guess I'll start to copy over my contacts the hard way (about 100 of them) by manually retyping all that information into my iPad.

Just in case it might just be a problem with some corruption in my contacts, this program might work for anyone else out there with an older iPod - if it works for you, great; if not, well nothing lost but a little time.

A final update to my previous post of January 26. I never managed to find the time yet to manually type all those contacts into my iPad but tonight I figured I'd give Syncios one more try. When I opened the program I got a popup advising there was an update available. I installed the update, and it apparently fixed whatever was wrong the first time. My contacts transferred easily in seconds. The procedure exported from the iPod to the PC and then imported from the PC to the iPad. Quick and easy this time.

Assuming that you are running the same iOS on both devices ..... Do you use iTunes? Transfer purchases from the iPhone into iTunes, backup the iPhone, and sync the phone again. Connect the iPad to iTunes, restore from the backup of the phone and then sync with iTunes.

iPhone only apps will appear in their native size on the iPad screen but they will work.

Restoring from the backup will place all of the app data, device settings and documents onto the iPad but you still have to sync with iTunes in order to place of the apps and your other media onto the device.

if you use iCloud only, restore the iPad from the backup of the phone and that will take care of everything.

Some useful and informative information here.

In my views, to back up iPhone contacts on iPhone with tapping "Settings > iCloud > Backup & Storage" to select "Back up Now". Then, move to iPad to sign in the same Apple ID and passcode so that you can restore the data from the backup files on iPad. In addition, if you want to transfer iPhone contacts to iPad directly, AirDrop is a useful method to share the contacts. Swipe up from the bottom of the home screen on iPhone to enable AirDrop and then, tap the iPhone contacts that you tend to transfer to iPad. Tao share button and select “AirDrop" to share the name card to iPad but you must turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on iPad and iPhone both.
