TWAIN Sane and Mac OS X Lion

Hi everyone,

last year I bought a MacBook with Snow Leopard and, while installing the drivers for my scanner (Canon CanoScan N676U), I found out that it was not compatible with Mac OS X 10.6. So I tried to search a solution to my problem with Google and I found a very interesting project.

So I installed TWAIN Sane (all the links can be found in my old discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2506911?answerId=11962603022#11962603022).

Now I would like to upgrade to Lion whenever it comes out but I fear that TWAIN Sane could be not compatible with the new OS. What do you think? Is there anyone who has installed and tried it with the new OS (maybe a developer)? I've already tried to send an email to the developer of the "solution" (I don't know if it can be properly called a "software"), but so far he hasn't sent me a reply.

Thank you in advance to anyone who tries to help me!

Did you choose "Hide details" while trying in Image Capture ?

There are still some bugs with the Twain Sane Interface. I am now with Mac OS 10.7.3 and Graphic Converter 7.6.1, HP ScanJet 3300C. The cursors and triangle menus for the dimensions of the area make the interface quit. In grey mode, only vertical strips appears (seems like an old bug mentionned long ago). One can however scan in color mode dragging the mouse to define the area. Descibe the problems to Mattias Ellert (see the Twain Sane site). He generally does not answer, but I think he still works making his software better.

Did you try the Snac software ? It works fine as far as I tried it.

The Apple Bug Reporting Team closed the bug ID# 9975602 I reported, saying "We are closing this bug since our engineers are aware of the issue and will continue to track it."

After installing the twain-sane packages for lion from http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ i've been using the following home made applescript for some time now to be able to use my Canoscan Lide 30. Feel free to adapt it to your needs...

Thanks windmr! thanks a lot for the script.

Maybe it's useful to add how to use it:

- Go to applications

- Open "Utility" folder

- Launch "Apple Script Editor"

- Copy Windmr's script to the main window of the script editor

- In the menu bar, choose "Save as..." and save it on the desktop or wherever it is comfortable.

It is a nice interface for scanning with Ellert's Godsend creature!

I don't think its as simple as tweaking the settings. I have just upgraded my imac to mountain lion after testing that I could get Twain Sane to work with my Canoscan Lide 50 just fine on my macbook but for some reason on my imac get a skewed image no matter what I do. It still works fine on my macbook pro. They both have the same os and the same scanner software installed. I try scanning with exactly the same scanner settings etc. This is really frustrating - should be a simple fix but......!! Any ideas. I'm not so comfortable doing scripts etc.

Thanks for your suggestions, but no go with either. Skewed image remains when using image capture and sane on my imac(although overview image fine). I couldn't get it to work with Graphic Converter at all in 32 bit mode or anything else. It doesn't even show up as a data source. But still works fine with my macbook which as far as I can work out has the same settings etc. - presumably something in the back end isn't the same, but I can't for the life of me think what it might be! Just a nusiance as it's my imac that's permanently connected to my scanner, not my macbook.

Great - we have some progress. After a bit of fiddling I got SNAC to work. SNAC is way better than lots of useless skewed images etc. and I don't want to sound ungrateful...but... I'm studying and I mainly use my scanner to copy book sections and articles (paperless office etc) as multi-page pdfs. This is going to be a bit fiddly using SNAC, as, unless I have missed something, I'm going to have to scan each page as a separate tiff and then open them in preview and combine them to get a multi-page document.

Image Capture no more works correctly with Twain Sane. I reported the bug long ago to Apple. They declared the bug "closed" though it is not solved. It just means they know it.

Twain Sane should work with GC 8.3.1. Make sure you are in 32 bits mode and choose

Graphic Converter -> File -> Scan -> Scan with Twain Interface

If Image Capture shows the SANE source, if SNAC works, GC should show the SANE source too.

Well I've tried reinstalling GC and still no go. I definitely have 8.3.1. I think I'm in 32 bi more - when I open the program and select create document, 32 bit true color is the default option which I tick. But it still doesn't show the Sane scanner when I try file/scan etc.

Image capture is working OK with my macbook - that is why I'm kind of persisting with the imac because i figure there must be just some sort of background tweak as otherwise the settings are the same. But in the absence of that am happy to try graphic converter if I can get it working.
