TWAIN Sane and Mac OS X Lion

We don't know. TWAIN Sane is a third-party software so it's up to it's developer to make it compatible (assuming it no longer is.) All we can tell you is to install it and try it out.

Even had a developer tested it with a Lion seed he/she could not discuss it here.

I get exactly the same "spiral" pattern scan with the Twain SANE drivers (designed for 10.6) on an old HP 5470c Scanjet. And, of course, the HP drivers don't work because they are Power PC based and there is no Rosetta on Lion. Maybe the Twain SANE developers will come out with something for 10.7

Hi, same problem here. Manual scanning does work (as a temporary workaround?)

open a Terminal

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin

/usr/local/bin/scanimage --mode Color --format tiff --resolution 600 > ~/scanimage.tiff

and a TIFF file is created, which is easily convertible. Good luck!

I couldn't get the manual method to work, so I DL'ed the trial version of Vuescan, which says it supports the HP Scanjet 5470c, but needs the HP drivers. Of course, the only drivers I have now are from Twain SANE.

I can do a Preview Scan with PDF Pen with this scanner, but get the spiraled scan when I did the true scan using PDF Pen.

I've tried Vuescan but it does not recognize the HP Scanner, using presumably the SANE drivers. I can't load the old HP drivers from the CD Rom disk I have because they are Power PC, not supported in Lion because of no Rosetta. I can't even get the Mac to recognize the HP Mac CD Rom.

Do you know if Vuescan uses the SANE drivers? No indication from the Vuescan support site on any of this.

I did email the developer of Vuescan, and he replied immediately that Vuescan doesn't support SANE drivers. Simple as that.

Without Rosetta in Lion and without any support from HP for Mac drivers on this scanner (and others) since 2002 ⚠ when they put out the PowerPC drivers on a CD for which you had to pay $10 extra, I think the scanner is pretty much dead in the water. I suppose there could be updated SANE drivers for Lion and that Image Capture and other programs like PDF Pen which use Image Capture might once again work.

Otherwise, the only answer is to get a new scanner. It won't be an HP scanner, though. No reason to reward HP for their lack of support. Not that they're worried about going under, though.

Does work too on my old HP ScanJet 3300C, Mac OS 10.7.

I had the same problem with TWAIN Sane, but it's really easy to fix: just scan as TIFF instead of JPEG and you are fine. You could convert the TIFF into a JPEG using Preview afterwards.

Wow! You have saved the day!! It does work to save it as a TIFF, and i can also save it as a PDF, as it turns out.

With my scanner, the HP Scanjet 5470, it will only scan a text image, not black and white or color, using the SANE drivers, but that's all I really need.

Interesting. I've got an ancient Canon LIDE 30(?) that worked fiine with Snac, up until Lion. Now Snac doesn't do anything. Just sits and says "Initializing".

I tried Image Capture and although I can get a good preview, every format for the final scan ends up scewed.

Reinstalled Snac and now all is well....
