"Sharing requires more memory to be available" when I have plenty available already

Error: "Sharing requires more memory to be available. Quit iMovie and relaunch it"

I have the same problem ever since updating to Lion and/or the latest iMovie (I did one after the other). I use iMovie everyday for work this is pretty frustrating. Quitting and relaunching iMovie does seem to work but I have to do this every time I send a project to iDVD. Bugs.

Anyone found any solutions? Not at all keen on deleting / moving thumbnails as I have many and it worked fine before the updates. Using 3.1Ghz quad core with 8GB ram and as I mentioned it was fine before the updates. Don't think it is genuinely short on memory

Thanks, I'll try it if it gets worse. Quitting and reopening does work for me. Just shouldn't have to is all.

I suspect it is something to do with the thumbnails as iMovie is now unreliable when building projects - gets stuck on a frame in the preview screen, gets stuck on thumbnail when scrolling through events etc.

ISSUE WORKAROUND

Note: I have tried moving all projects, no luck here. One HACK is to duplicate and splice your project into pieces of @8min and render the pieces... then reassemble in QT and save. I'm doing this now for my latest video of our State Meets 4x800, 800M and Mile races ... featuring (ahem!) ladies and gentlemen, the worlds #12th fastest human over 800M in the high school ranks (soph) and rising fast ... I have same issue. Unfortunately neither restarting, moving projects or reducing size works. I can create a brand new project with one sec of video and it won't share😢

I have had to start a crash course of learning Final Cut Express so I can get some videos done. For the videos I am doing (short sporting highlights) its like using a sledgehammer to crack an egg!

Does anyone know if Final Cut Pro has the same problem?

I had the same problem. It appeared after the flurry of pre Lion updates a few days ago. I used Time Machine to replace iMovie 9.0.4 with iMovie 9.0.2. Problem solved.

In iMovie 6, instead of sharing the iMovie project to iDVD you could drag the iMovie project icon (the one with the star on it) into the edge of the iDVD project main menu, being careful not to put it into a drop zone, and it would import right in. Don't know if that works in later versions of iMovie, but you might try it and see what happens.

I submitted formal Feedback to Apple to resolve this bug. In some cases it may be legitimate but in many cases it has to be erroneous as people have sufficient RAM, sufficient storage, and the program itself is not using too much memory as reported by Activity Monitor. Frustrating but hopefully iMovie 9.0.5 will correct the bug.

Experienced the same problem tonight when trying to export a video intro I made in iMovie. Haven't used iMovie since I started using FCP X.

Definitely a bug after an upgrade or it may be related to Lion.

Anyhow, this workaround did work for me:

Relaunch iMovie and make sure the project are listed instead of having the project you want to export open.

Right click on the project and select export in the Project Gallery menu. For some weird reason, it will then export without the error message.

Well the problem isn't fixed yet. While working in iMovie last night I got this message when trying to share my little 2 minute movie to iTunes. I have the fastest iMac Apple currently makes with 12GB of ram. I had almost 6GB free.

None of the hints in this thread work for me except going back to iMovie 9.0.2.
