what is org.postfix.master and how can I stop it? Do I want to?

Hi All,

I have this going on in console every 10 seconds, endlessly:

18/07/2011 18:20:41 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[313]) Exited with exit code: 1

18/07/2011 18:20:41 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

18/07/2011 18:20:51 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[314]) Exited with exit code: 1

18/07/2011 18:20:51 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

18/07/2011 18:21:01 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[315]) Exited with exit code: 1

18/07/2011 18:21:01 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

18/07/2011 18:21:11 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[316]) Exited with exit code: 1

18/07/2011 18:21:11 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

I don't know why but my instinct says this should not be happening.

Can someone please tell me:

1. do i need this? if so, what is it?

2. if not, how can i stop it?

Thanks!

Well the ACTUAL cause is that I once in a while f**k around with crap I don't know anything about. 🙂

The incident itself was the following: There are two of us using this Mac. I own it and can do what I want. The other is listed as admin but is blocked from doing a lot of stuff, like adding music to iTunes on his "side" of the Mac and moving things around in folders.

So I'm sure one of my attempts to give him the exact same rights as myself probably did all that.

It there any way to get it all fixed? will the upcoming Lion update do that for me?

Jul 19, 2011 1:11 PM in response to digitigger

No, Lion will not fix this.

Every file in that directory has wrong permissions, an unnecessary ACL, or an unnecessary HFS attribute. I don't have any way of knowing what other damage was done to the /private directory, or to the rest of your system for that matter. All you've done is to repair permissions, which is usually pointless.

The Apple Support recommendation would be to back up your data in Time Machine, erase your startup volume, reinstall Mac OS X, restore your data using Setup Assistant, then run Software Update. It's hours of work, and I'm not even sure it will fix everything, but under the circumstances I wouldn't be comfortable suggesting anything else.

Most important, if you take computing seriously, you need to do whatever it takes to keep this from happening again. Whoever did this could have destroyed your data, installed spyware, or done whatever else he wanted -- or didn't want. Every Mac should have one and only own owner, who is also the only administrator. You can have as many other users as you want with their own account, but they should not be administrators, which means that they can't change anything except their own files, and they should not know the admin password. You yourself should not run as admin except when doing admin tasks. Keep all your data in a regular user account and switch to your admin account with Fast User Switching only when necessary.

That only scratches the surface of what it takes to have a secure setup, but it will protect you from the most casual sort of vandalism, which seems to be what you have here.

The sudo chown command worked perfectly. Now one of my two repetitive problems, every 9 sec, is solved.

I am running Lion and used sudo chown _postfix:mail /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mta/master.lock as my mail log was structured differently from digitigger's.

The other one reads as follows in console:

11/8/11 1:27:16.049 PM com.identityfinder.launchdaemon: 2011-11-08 13:27:16,049 INFO - Endpoint service started. Version: 5.0.0.2
11/8/11 1:27:26.109 PM com.identityfinder.launchdaemon: 2011-11-08 13:27:26,108 ERROR - serverUrl is empty.
11/8/11 1:27:27.109 PM com.apple.launchd: (com.identityfinder.launchdaemon) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

I tried throwing the identify finder application in the trash, and also an identity-h and an identity-v unix executable files in the trash, restarted, but the console messages are the same.

Any ideas?

Thanks
