Cannot adjust Sound / Volume

@Garyinwarsaw's advice fixed my issue! I after I changed per your settings, I was immediately able to adjust the volume without rebooting. Thank you!!!

I have a Mid 2012 MBP and had the same issue. I did everything listed as solutions in these posts and nothing seemed to work except plugging in and taking out the headphones multiple times. It was weird, all of a sudden I was able to adjust the volume.

Open terminal and write:

sudo killall coreaudiod

This will reset your audio driver process.

This worked for me. Easy fix. No restart, no complication!!

This was perfect. I could still hear the sounds for changing the volume, but even when I turned it all the way down to mute it wouldn't work. Then I tried

sudo killall coreaudiod

Try running this terminal command: osascript -e 'set volume 0'

it sets your volume to 0 and you can change it once again 😀

this is also useful for changing your volume via the terminal 😀 maybe it works over ssh 😀

It just happened to me for the first time (macbook air on Yosemite and using headphones).

Luckily, just unplugin and re-plugin my headphones resolved the problem...

"system preference" -> sound -> output -> headphones.

I think you may set up some third party sound software, say sound flower, after this preference, you can adjust your sound again.

this worked for me.

go to the system preferences and choose sound and then choose output and the bottom there is sound metre so you just decrease it and then increase it , it helped me

Plug in a headphone chord into the audio, and then remove it again. You should be able to regain control over the master audio/sound buttons.

Hey there. Same problem here, on my MBP mid 2009. I've tried everything from rebooting the computer through sudokillall and finally the toothpick thing and had no success. The only thing I haven't done yet is format my computer (never did it, don't want to do it now). In sound preferences - output, all I see is Digital Out. Any suggestions?
