Cannot adjust Sound / Volume

I can't seem to adjust the Sound / Volume on my Macbook Pro. I've tried adjusting by pressing the volume keys on the laptop as well as on the Sound setting in the System Preferences.

Now I know how to fix it, but it requires me to do this every single time I reboot or power on my laptop. Plug in a headphone in the headphone jack and unplug after. That solves it and I can then adjust sound / volume. I have searched throughout google trying to find a solution to the problem and cannot seem to fix this.

There is sound coming out of the internal speakers even though I can't adjust the sound, I can hear it.

Heres a screenshot of whats going on.

Please, it would be amazing if I can get this solved without having to constantly plug in and out a headphone just to get my speakers working.

I just had this problem again.... it has happend a few times before, but I've found a (couple of) solution that will work:

1. My problem almost always occur related to my headphones. I dunno why....

My solution is to reinsert the headphones, then restart the MBP and pull out the headphones again as soon as the screen is black.

2. If 1 doens't work, try resetting PRAM first or after. Do so by resetting or turning on your computer while holding down P+R+ALT+CMD and letting go after the first white screen. Then your PRAM is reset and the computer will restart.

Atleast one of those two should work.

for me it started when I installed a .pkg file.. when I actualy needed a .srt file.. Last time i downloaded a .srt file it was years ago so I thought this was how it always went but then i tried finding the .srt file but did not succeed. Already then I was paranoia because i just remember downloading an .srt file doesn't mean installing something, unpacking ok but installing no! I tried finding it but it had became late and i even forgot all about it then suddenly this thing started to happen with sound and other crazy little almost unnoticeable small things started to happen all of a sudden but never together.. Then I visited this page for more information and was able to temporarily fix the problem by selecting 'selected audio output' or something. Then when I came to comment myself I wanted to ad the link of the website I suspect for infecting my laptop or something, i clicked on the ".srt-file" again to get a link for dropping it here for experts to investigate (?!) the issue and maybe the connection to the link I was going to provide and then all of a sudden again audio quit working, when I pulled out my aux cable and inserted again it even flickered in "working/not-working/working/not-working" which was so annoying I just pulled it out again and was able to mute my laptop by pauzing my iTunes... Then to check some downloads that were stored in document-file, I just started to delete all unnecessary and random stuff that i didn't know or i was never going to need ever again... Then... Most important side of my story is that when I went to empty my trash (i already had inserted back my aux cable as my iTunes was on pauze...) So I empty my trash bin and just as i even clicked on emptying it audio went beck online!! Like, in the upper right corner the symbol became black again, not grey anymore like unable to select 'volume' but back again to black and all is working just fine right now... no more problems whatsoever.... so my best guess it's a virus... or a little hack?
Does anyone know any immediate possibility to check whether your laptop [and i mean if] your microphone or webcame are being hacked? And possibly being monitored... ? Just because sometimes it's like i can hear my microphone getting activated??? Is that even possible? And may I clarify my suspicions by saying I have spend a lot of time in skype to call home or abroad or whatever reason I was using it and if a 'call' would start, for example in a video chat, the moment the connection was made i could hear a very high frequency sorta a buzzing sound, almost like you can hear your tv being turned on but yet comuter still muted and as soon as the call would end so would the high buzzing sound stop... and a few times i started to notice that same sound just starting to buzz every now and then without skype even open (but as I recall facebook might have been open in the back... And i would notice the annoying noisy computer buzzy sound very easy to detect and yes) exactly the same as a call would start in skype... So it would also disapear when i would end the call in skype...
Other then seing or rather feeling a connection between the two different cases, I strongly recommend a good clean up of your useless files, and never ever forget to empty the bin otherwise it will still be on your computer where ever the basterd would hide 🙂 .... So glad i don't have that stupid, boring, annoying problem anymore! Just try it ? and can somebody please confirm that i am not loosing my mind please?? thanx allot people!!! cheers

I want to add when all was ok again, i went back to sound preferences, and i noticed it would not say "detectable audio iput, digital audio and a few other names in that list" but now it would say" detectable audio output, headphones, and the other few names that were on that particularly list.
I just noticed the change between digital audio <- and -> Headphones ...
why would that be the case for this problem? a virus? cheers everyone Elle.
