anyone else having major problems with Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard?

is anyone else having major problems with Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard?

- address bar and search box are not resizing with browser window. the address bar and seach box set their size to the window when Safari is launched and remain that size.

- anytime i try to customize toolbar items disappear and i have to restart Safari to get them to appear.

- some 3rd party icons just remove themselves from the toolbar after a period of time

- when i drag a page from the tab bar to create it's own browser window the window disappears but is listed in the windows menu bar. when i select that window from the menu bar the window appears but i can't click on anything.

I've repaired permissions numerous times, reinstalled safari numerous times and restarted my machine numerous times and the issues all remain. i've never had any issues with Safari until now and 5.1 is looking like a huge mess.

besides the bugs above, has anyone had any luck with 1password working with Safari 5.1?

That's interesting. I thought I had read on the 1P blog that they were working to bring the contextual menu back - I guess I can live without it - but it threw for a loop at first - since that had always been my primary method of interface. I'm using cmd \ now - but that's extra work - rather than a two finger click on the track pad and then single click about an inch or so over. Also - Evernote is broken!!! Sheesh! So far - I see absolutely nothing better about the new Safari - and many many things that are degraded. I understand that security under the hood has been improved, separate processes, better sandboxing, but the degraded performance doesn't compensate IMO.

BTW - outside of 1P, Evernote and Click-to-Flash, I use no other add-ons to Safari. It's definitely in dire need of another update - and soon. Till then - I will start leaning on other browsers - heck, I may even go check out Opera finally.

JohnGrayson,

I just updated this morning as the software update popped up. After installing Safari 5.1 and restarting no video on any sight would work and on You Tube I got the message "plug-in failure."

I did all the Hard Drive permissions repair etc and no luck.

Here is what did work. Mac Safari uses Flip For Mac for its video plug in. I downloaded Flash Player and enabled my plugins in the Safari Preferences and everything worked just fine. I think Safari will defaulty to the plug in that actually works.

The right click menu is gone from 1P. Aesthetically - 1P is improved.

the right click won't be back. apple is no longer allowing developers make plugin's for safari, instead they have to make extensions. 1P relied on a plugin for the right click option, you now have to click on the 1P button in the toolbar - aesthetically, i agree... it's much nicer. this is the problem that tastyapp was having. they had made safari plugins to work with their apps and those plugins caused safari to crash and were pretty much solely responsible for all the problems i experienced with 5.1 in the first post.

Yeah, right. If Safari 5.1. no longer allows plugins then why is Flash still working. It's definitely a plugin, not an extension? Hmmmm?

plugins for media/web CONTENT (flash, quicktime, etc) are completely different than 3rd party plugins (1P) that change the functionality of an application. do yourself a favor and read tastyapps blog about their Mail and Safari plugins no longer working in Lion (and with Safari 5.1):

http://oven.tastyapps.com/?p=43

notice how Agilebits no longer refers to their plugin as a plugin, instead calling it an extension:

http://blog.agilebits.com/2011/07/os-x-lion-and-the-state-of-the-new-1password-e xtension/

why do you think that is? hmmm, maybe because it's no longer a plugin.

I am!, and this makes no sense!, I work on software development, need the GWT plugin and it just doesn't work anymore, I need to use different browsers, indeed I'm using FF, Chrome and Safari to test an application feature and since I hitted the update button I'm literally screwed.

Indeed I decided to test on a Windows machine, and it really *****, and I've been trying to find a way to downgrade to the previous version but can't find a way on how to, I called apple and they just say they're working on a fix that will be released on next days... so what should I tell my client?, I have a delay because Apple usually delivered tested components and those had never given me any trouble but I've been like a week without being able to fully test the app on my machine and I have to use a slow windows machine that after taking more than 40 minutes compiling at least works for testing... this *****!, I hope apple does something fast to fix this, I've gotta say I'm frustrated at this point 😟

But the lesson is learnt, from now on I won't updgrade confidently until first checking how those updates will affect me, so Lion will have to wait at least 3-6 months before I put a penny on it...

I downloaded & installed the security patches too, and I don't notice any difference. I also don't recall reading anything Safari related that the security patches were addressing, certainly nothing about performance, memory usage, etc. I'm wondering when the fix will be released, as the higher level tech at Apple told me three days ago it would be ASAP....

well updating the 1Password plugin works like a charm - not

Safari just starts beachballing while trying to load and reinstall the plugin form the 1Password prefs-window. I guess that one's to old since according to what Safari is trying to load is this: (file:///private/var/folders/zM/zMJbjuYmGlWnMR1xxqNHdU+++TI/-Tmp-/TemporaryItem s/(A%20Document%20Being%20Saved%20By%201Password)/1PasswordBeta.safariextz)

I cant locate the new plugin at Apple since I dont know what Apple has sorted it in under and its not posible to search for extensions.

I have one opinion about Safari 5.1 at the moment: Whoever the person is who is responsible for this crap he should be going back to the basement at Microsoft and stay there

I'm also having major issues with 5.1 on both Windows 7 and Lion machines. I'll add my biggest annoyances:

  1. The back button doesn't go back most of the time. It closes all tabs. If held, there's no list of previous pages. Right click (secondary on the Mac) and chose Back works.
  2. Right click (secondary) on a picture and chose Copy Image. Try to paste into another application and the image is blank.
  3. Swiping on the Mac works only some of the time as noted in this and many other threads.

C'mon Apple. Really?
