Since upgrading to 10.7 - Volume Control Buttons sometimes don't work

I just upgraded to 10.7 Lion and have the following problem.

Some times my Macbook Pro 13 (Mid 2010) don't let me control the volume with the vol up and down buttons. The speaker symbol appears

while pressing the buttons but the speaker is greyed out. While that, sound plays with the last adjusted volume.

Most times the problem appears after standby mode.

A restart don't help in my case! Sound settings are all correct. I tried to shut down, restart in Win 7 via Bootcamp, restarted in OS X Lion.

Still no sound control available :-(

So I've searched the web.. It seems the goal is to reset Core Audio Daemon :

Open Terminal, type in or copy :

sudo kill -9 `ps ax|grep 'coreaudio[a-z]' |awk '{print $1}'`

type in your password and confirm - voila : volume control works again!

But this is very annoying, because the last 5 years i've used os x i've never had a problem like this!

Is this a known problem ? Any known workarounds or patches available ?

Hope anybody can help and/or Apple fixes asap!

Excuse me for the lack of knowlege but how do I stop getting emails on this subject . I applied the script posted by velocity above and my volume controls are now fine on macbook pro mid 2009 , I have went into preferences here and unticked all the notifications ( set to NO ) . Not a major thing but slightly irritating .

ah Ha , I found how to do it , - checkbox -email notifications ,select it and delete , done .

Hope Apple will fix this volume issue with the first patch , you would have thought it would not have occured in the final release .

Same issue on my Macbook Aluminium Late 2008. No sounds after waking up from sleep, both internal speakers and line-in. The only way to fix is to restart or to kill coreaudio process.

Same issue here, MBP 13inch, Early 2011, Entry Level.

Problem can be solved by either killing core audio services, or by inserting a headphone into mbp.

Hope Apple will sovle this soon.

Same problem on my MacBookPro8,1. Plugging in a 1/8" audio cable activates the control.😟

same issue here, using MBP 13" late 2009

I just installed 10.7.2 combo, the one recently released for developers and I still suffer this issue. this feels really stupid. if they don't fix this in next 2 month i will go back for ever to snow leopard.

every release of an apple os is a nightmare with some ridiculous issue, with snow leopard was the problem with the printer drivers, and the printers which had to go to the trash. I wonder what will be with the next os release.... Apple is becoming the new microsoft, bit by bit...

just changed the keepalive string to true.. restarted...

volume control no more available :-( tried to plug in my headphones.. now this does not help anymore :-(

It just worked fine before.

So my test results show that this makes it worse - in my case. Try by yourself.

YES! This thing realy helps! BUT you MUST repair disk permissions! Atherwise it won't work. Now my Macbook Pro mid 2009 runs without any sound control issues!

Ok, just resetted the rights of the file ..

sudo chown root:wheel /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist

works.. 😀

Problem ist still here.. shut down my macbook yesterday. Started lion this morning - volume control worked fine. Closed the lid (standby), opened it again 2 hours later - volume control is greyed out again. So i've checked the

"com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist" File again. KeepAlive value is "true"
