I read this Adobe article yesterday, and based on what it said, as well as what I had read on other forums, I went ahead and upgraded to Lion I then updated to Java For Mac OS X 10.7 as suggested in the Adobe article. However, both InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 crash when I attempt to print. As soon as I select "Print" the spinning rainbow ball appears for a short time, then the programs crash. I'm not having any problems printing from Acrobat Pro 9, Photoshop CS4 or Photoshop Elements 8. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Ok I have read all of these posts and have seen everything that has been recommended to make CS4 work correctly- the problem I am having is when I go into the java preferences to update it as recommended here and at adobe.... I get an error that says need to connect to the internet.... but I AM connected.... any suggestions???

I just installed OS X Lion this afternoon on my Late 2009 Macbook Pro (17") and have noticed that PS CS4 is no longer working. I keep getting this error message:

"You can't open the application Adobe Photoshop CS4 because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

Prior to upgrading I was running PS CS4 in Rosetta and PS CS5 in normal mode. LR3 is still functional as is PS CS5. I've re-installed without uninstalling the old version. Then I uninstalled then I re-installed fresh all to no avail. Any suggestions?

I think you have answered your won question. CS4 is a Universal app. If you have forced it to run under Rosetta - undo that so it can run native.

I'm away from my main machine and have only Lion on this machine, so I can't look to see what you might have done to force CS4 to run under Rosetta.

As the Adobe Article sited above, all but droplets should work fine. If that's an issue don't expect Adobe to do anything but tell you to go to CS5 or stay on 10.6.

I would but you can't in Lion. The application was set to run in Rosetta because one of my most used plugins didn't work in 64bit mode, hence the CS5 version running in 64bit and CS4 running in Rosetta. The only way to start/stop Rosetta functionality was to open the actual .app file in Finder, then "Get Info" and select the checkbox that turned on Rosetta. Now that I've upgraded to Lion there isn't a way to turn off that functionality which to my understanding forced CS4 to run in 32bit mode. So I can't fix the problem and I have upgraded to CS5, as well as uninstalling/reinstalling CS4 (theoretically eliminating the Rosetta prerequisite) to no avail.

I'd say that Adobe/Apple should at least acknowledge that this isn't meant to happen and help me figure out how to resolve this as a matter of course to keep their 2-level down products working properly.

Lastly I have no idea how to go back to 10.6, I can't seem to figure out how to go about that in time machine. Thoughts?

Did you make a clone/bootable backup of your 10.6 system before installation? Booting from it would allow you to change the setting and then move it to the Lion system. As I recall on 10.6 you could select 32 bit mode and have it run native,

But it sounds like you may have more issues with plugins and have to saty on 10,6 until you choose to upgrade to CS5 (and the plugins if available).

Regarding using TM to revert to 10.6 see this page whihc is part of a comrehensive site on Time Machine. If you look I think you wil find other dicsussions on reverting to 10.6.

Good Luck,

I don't have a bootable backup - would have used that if I did and I don't have the SL install disk or I'd use that as well.

Plug-ins aren't the problem since they have all been removed (by me initially) then all preferences were erased by using the "Delete Preferences" option within the Uninstaller dialog. Secondly the fresh install should have overwritten any of ther prior existing preferences set by Photoshop.

Therefore the PowerPC error appears to be a fault within Lion's interpretation about how to interact with the software. Somehow Lion thinks that this "Universal" app, must be processed using the PowerPC code. Obviously that isn't supported and there isn't a way to force Lion to reevaluate the software using the intel architecture.

Thoughts?

I REALLY NEED THIS SOLVED!

I have the same problem compounded by the fact that I also do not have an com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file in my preferences. Trashing that file seems to work for those that have that file but what do those of us who do not seem to have that file do? I also tried uninstalling and re-installing Photoshop to see if it might create that file but to no avail. Not only did it not open as usual now but it also installed with the message "installed; with errors". No kidding. The whole relationship between apple and adobe is becoming errant. Anyone, anyone got and ideas? Please. The wierd thing is that my CS4 InDesign and Illustrator work just fine.
