I"d like an answer to this also. I have two laptops, Macbook Pro - late 2008, a Macbook Air - 2010, and an iMac -early 2008. Air drop appears on the laptops but not the iMac. Any ideas?
AirDrop requires Wifi. Make sure it is on
I just found this and it's why it doesn't show up on my iMac :
There are only specific Mac models which would be compatible to use AirDrop. See below cut & paste text from Apple Website (Lion System requirements):
===========================
AirDrop
supports the following Mac models:
AirDrop doesn't need WiFi 🙂
"No network required
AirDrop uses peer-to-peer Wi-Fi between participating Mac computers and doesn’t require a wireless network infrastructure or base station".
I understand that AirDrop doesn't need Wi-Fi. I'm guessing that the people you want to share with all need AirDrop for it to work. How close/far away must two people be to use it?
I have a 13 inch MacBook late 2008 2.1 GHz and airdrop is not working, it was there on the sidebar after install but once I restarted the MacBook, now the icon is gone. I was happy knowing that I don't have to use DropCopy anymore but looks like I may have to.
In finder hold command and click , to get the finder settings. Chose the sidebar setting and enable “airdrop“, i have the macbook early 2008 ):
All users wishing to collaborate/share files via Air Drop must have supported hardware & also be in Air Drop simultaneously...
Air Drop does take a few moments to scan and establish communications between collaborators...
Computers for which the user does not have Air Drop active in their finder will not show up for other surrounding users...
Once each/all users are in Air Drop in their Finder windows at the same time, they will be able to see one another and drop files following the prompts...
File drops post to the users' downloads folder...
But it is reiterrated that the hardware should be supported as in the post above...
Thank you for you answer, now i now what's the real problem. Do you have any idea if there is any chance to make an upgrade for a mid 2007 iMac so that AirDrop can work ?
Thanks in advance!
PS: On my MacBookPro and iMac (2011) AirDrop works just fine form the moment i first run LION so, indeed, the problem is from the year your mac was purchased. It has be to newer than 2008. 😟
bbroad25,
As to how close, 15-20 feet according to the guy on AppleCare. My experience bore that out.
There will be no upgrade to allow you mid-2007 iMac to work.
I thought so... i was referring if there is any chance to make like a component upgrade or something but i'm preaty positive there ain't no chance. Of course, i can use 'FileSharing' between my other two macs (iMac & MBP) and this one but i was willing to take advantage of LION OSx as much as i can.
Mabe you guys can help me....
My Pro is mid-2007 so AirDop is out but I am still having network issues since the Lion install on both machines. I did post this a couple of days ago in Lion Newtorking & got reads but no replies. Maybe you guys can help:
I cannot get my MacPro to mount onto my macbook pro. I can get to the drives on my MacPro using CMD+K afp, but need the drives to show up on the desktop. When I try to connect it simply says, 'connection failed'.
1. I have re-checked my 'sharing' setting on both computers. my admin login has read & write access on both computers. Is there a new setting issue I am missing with the AirDrop?
2, I am using Belkin wirelkess router from the Pro & WiFi on the macbook. The macbook show the AirDrop in the Finder sidebar so it is there but obviously not on the Pro.
3. i have tried using the admin logins for both computers on the macbook to gain access, it did not work.
4. when i access them using CMD+K, they do not mount to the desktop nor the finder window sidebar.
I hope you guys can help. This is taking too much time to work around.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), 17" 8g RAM 2010
2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, Mac OS X (10.7), 250g/(2) 500g/1tb internals, 7g RAM mid-2007
I would look into Apple's new Apple Remote Desktop software.
Definitely unrelated, nice try for the transition. Anyways...
AFP works on port 548. Try setting up port forwarding on your Belkin router.
Lion now supports Samba/Windows Workgroups. Try sharing your drives with SMB.
There's a nifty Mac App Store app called Mt.Mounter. It claims to auto mount and unmount your network drives. It worked great for me.
You can also try this applescript:
tell application "Finder"
if not (exists disk "MacProHardDriveName") then
try
mount volume "afp://MacProUserName:password@MacProNameIPAddress/HardDriveName"
end try
end if
end tell
or these terminal commands:
mkdir /Volumes/MacProHDDName
/sbin/mount -t afp afp://MacProUserName:password@MacProNameIPAddress/MacProHDDName
i'm done. keep this in another topic.
