Installed Lion, Mail is not working

I've been pro apple from the start but this is untenable - mail just loads some emails for ever and then displays read mail as unread - sorry it's been too long for a fix -I've installed thunderbird and will probably stick with it. Very disappointed apple. Hopeless.

I had the same trouble, but was able to fix the problem pretty easily. First, I had to remove the Mail icon from the Dock. Then I opened the Mail app directly from the Applications folder, selected OPTIONS > KEEP IN DOCK and now everything is working again. This avoided a HUGE headache, hope it works for you, too.

I found the solution to my problem after I upgraded and it lies with the X509 Anchors.

SOLUTION: Go to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security-common.plist (it may be a hidden file) and change it to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security-common.plist.bak. This should remove the system calling to old outdated anchors and allow it to use the new security protocols under Lion's sandboxing feature.

It worked for me and mail runs fine.

Didn't fix my problem - thanks anyway - I've had to change to Thunderbird as sometimes my mail was fine but then I cannot read it and it just keeps 'Loading'. Very Very Very frustrating!

Prior to changing the file name I did delete all my information and files from the mail program (Users\Mail). This allowed a fresh boot of the mail system so you may want to try that.

Also, if you could post a console log of when your mail freezes it may be helpful.

Same problem here.....Do someboy know how to fix the bug? when i started Mail for 1st time the app start importing all may old emails from SL (about 39,000). Then mail app crashed no windows appears..When I tried to quit mail. it didn't works...

If the mail updraded and you can't see your old emails in your previous mailboxes, then select the mailbox then go to: MAILBOX, bottom of the menu, then REBUILD. It will find your emails again.

How were you able to delete the User/Mail files? My system refuses to delete them. I provide the admin logon id and password and nothing happens. The Mail. Contacts, Calendars is greyed out in System Prefs. I can't figure out why this is or how to change it. A number of posts have indicated that deleting the account via System Prefs forces the system to delete the folders.

Ever since I upgraded to Lion on my Mac Pro, Mail didn't work at all. Strangely enough when I upgraded my Macbook Pro, everything went well. After pouring over forums, Smeeworld's advice was the best! I deleted the user/library/mail folder (after unhiding it via Terminal - Lion removes it from Finder) and voila! I have my mail back!!!!

Similar problem for me, 10.7.2 installed on MacPro quad-core 2.26 Xeon 6 GB RAM. Deleting ~/Library/Mail folder worked. Went to it in Finder, actually moved onto desktop just in case. Mail then opened fine, MobileMe account was there, re-entered Exhcnage account ifno and voila! Folders are populating and synching and Mail now works. Which is good 'cause I was stuck with Outlook 2011 in the meantime, painful. Thanks Smee-watch out for that croc!

Checking the Spam Folder was a lifesaver. I had overlooked that SpamSieve needed to be updated with Lion. Thanks!

Just for the record, I deleted one of my AT&T accounts, as someone on this messageboard did. Curiously, when I went to re-create it, Mail forced me to open as an IMAP account, even though my other email accounts with AT&T are POP. It works fine, but I was wondering why this was.

This worked for me! Just click and drag the mail app from the applications folder and throw it on the desktop, it brings your old mail in with the new all in the upgraded app. Thanks for your help!

I was seeing the same problem, and was able to fix it. After upgrading to Lion, Mac Mail would not load messages and would hang on Restart. I did some of the things mentioned in this thread: open Mail from Applications instead of Dock, remove account from Mail, remove account from Sys Prefs, try to rebuild the mailbox... nothing was helping.

What did work: changing the Ethernet speed. System Preferences, Network, Ethernet, Advanced, Hardware. I switched from Configure Automatically to Manually, 100 Full duplex. Mail workes fine. Mailboxes showed up, messages loaded, and it quit properly.
