SMART error

Just tried to install Lion and am now getting a message telling me .This disk has S.M.A.R.T errors and has hardware problems that cannot be repaired. Does this really mean that the harddrive is shot and needs to be replaced?

Is Lion responsible for this? The computer has been working perfectly until I attempted this install.

I have a 27" iMac purchased in late 2009 as well. Think it could be a bad batch of iMacs? I have half a mind to monitor this thread and see how big it gets, then go to apple and claim either problems with Lion, or that they had a bad batch of iMacs in late '09. My computer was and still is running like a champ and never had any errors before Lion attempted install.

My computer is running fine, and doesn't seem to have hard drive problems. Last night I wiped out my hard drive and restored from my external time machine.... The hard drive still says I have the same error. I bought a Mac because of the great reputation of longevity, and this one apparently has broke just sitting on my desk with normal usage. "This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired." Well, the same is true about my relationship with apple if I have to pay to fix my top-of-the-line 1 1/2 year old iMac!

Ok so called apple care this morning and finally got a rep who sounded like they knew what they were doing. He told me if i was able to use the computer without issues (as I'm doing now) the SMART Error is likely a problem with the OS. He recommended that i do the following:

  1. Download Lion to an External Drive
  2. Make sure EVERYTHING on the computer is backed up with Time Machine. Make 2 backups just in case
  3. Hold option while booting up the Mac and select Disk Utility
  4. Select Erase Disk and confirm you want to erase the disk.
  5. Hold option again on Bootup if needed.
  6. Select your external HD and install lion from the external HD (Make sure to select Mac HD as the destination for the install).
  7. Restore everything from Time Machine.

I am not going to try this because i have a lot of sensitive work and programs that i cannot afford to take a risk of losing. I'm going to stay on Snow Leopard until i have to migrate to Lion, but please give this a shot if you are feeling risky and post your results.

Again, he was very confident that the SMART Alert had to be a false one and that this would install lion fine and fix the SMART Alert.

Good Luck!

I agree with you, I do need one because I use my computer for everything, but Im 16 and The jobs I have dont pay enough to go out and buy an external hardrive. Thank you for finding a solution, the way Im feeling is though I already dumped $30 into this program and now Apple wants me to pay atleast another $80 because they made a mistake? Thats insane!
