Just tried to install Lion and am now getting a message telling me .This disk has S.M.A.R.T errors and has hardware problems that cannot be repaired. Does this really mean that the harddrive is shot and needs to be replaced?
Is Lion responsible for this? The computer has been working perfectly until I attempted this install.

I agree. Hope you can find a better solution. Might just make sense to walk into a store with your computer, tell them about the issue and the dialogue i had with apple care. Maybe they'll do it for you for free. Raise **** till they do. Whatever you net on, post back once you get it fixed so everyone can know what worked out.
Same Error when trying to install Lion.
27" iMac only about 1 year old, this is ridiculous paying for something that doesn't work on a machine only a year old.
Same error here on my 27in imac less than a year old . Made an appointment last night apple tech suppost to call me at 7:45 am still waiting ....
I have the same SMART problem on a late 2009 macbook pro. the day before i bought lion the disk did not have a SMART problem. Somehow I get the feeling that apple is hoping to boost sales on new macs because of this. Just like the iphone/ios upgrade that made the iphone 3g useless.
Currently on iMac10,1 (early 2010) with the same problem. No issues up to this point.
Waiting for Apple to address.

I tried doing this on my 21.5 in iMac (late 2009) after getting the same S.M.A.R.T. error, but the error persisted and Lion would not install from the external boot drive. Luckily, the Time Machine restore was a cinch and I'm back to where I started. My 27 in iMac (late 2009) and my MacBrook Pro (2006) installed just fine. Hopefully someone figures this out soon or we just all have a bad bunch of hard drives. Replacing the iMac hard drive is going to be a bear.

Same problem. S.M.A.R.T. error on a desktop 27" iMac that has worked JUST FINE since purchased last year. Lets hope Apple gets this fixed soon.
Not going to install Lion on anything of my other Macs for now. And out $30 on top of it all. Not cool...
Thanks for sharing the solustion with us i'll go with what you suggested and post my result but i don't think i know how to download Lion into extranal HD? because it automatically jumps to my dock!

I get the same error! My 27" iMac (late 2009) is working perfectly as it is and has over 800GB available, but cannot install Lion. Actually, it says "Installed" on App Store page, but gives me S.M.A.R.T. error message when I try to run it.
Hey everyone, just got cut off with Apple Tech, he asked for my phone number incase we got cut off, but hasn't called back. I ahve 27" iMac bought in January 2010, exact same problem. I'm totally relieved I found this page! Makes me think there's hope. Of course this happens just after all my warrantys go up. Ugh....

For those wondering how to put the Lion installer on an external drive. Right click on the Lion icon in the dock, click options -> show in Finder. A finder window will come up with the file highlighted. Just drag that to your external HDD and your set.
Hope Apple releases a patch soon. I really don't want to bother with a clean install with all my apps and a bootcamp partition.
Has anybody tried wiping the hard drive and installing from an external hard drive and actually succeeded??
