SMART error

Just tried to install Lion and am now getting a message telling me .This disk has S.M.A.R.T errors and has hardware problems that cannot be repaired. Does this really mean that the harddrive is shot and needs to be replaced?

Is Lion responsible for this? The computer has been working perfectly until I attempted this install.

Yes, and was easy from Snow Leopard. My MB Pro HD crashed. Installed a new one, formatted the disk and used the disk utiltiy for a complete restore from Time Mach, including Snow Leo.

It was my first HD crash and restore so I was a wreck. So after years of Time Mach backups I;m glad I did them.

My friend had a heck of a time with migration from back up. My complete restore was ok.

But now I am getting the smart error on my iMac.

Okay just an update... i was with a senior technician and he suggested that i must do something called a "Zero-out date" he wants to erase all data from the main HD and install a NEW SL (snow leopard) version. The reason is he wants to know if i can still install OS or snow leopard in that so-called SMART error or not.

If the new virsion of snow leopard installed correctly, then there is a big chance that my HD has no problme otherwise it sould give me same SMART error message even with snow leopard.

So i go ahead and do the zero out date and guess what? i'm still able to install snow leopard in my HD or in another say there was no SMART error message appears during the instillation os SL!

my next step is to install Lion OS and see what will happn. I'll let you konow once my SL finished.

Cheers

Same problem here. I have a Mac mini 09. And no problems until Lion. Tried re installing SL and erasing the drive but it wont even erase. First FCX and now this!! What is going on at Apple???? Are they hiring Dell programers now? Who is going to pay for our HDisks????? Im always recomend Mac but they are letting us down big time. Its becoming another computer company.

I wiped out my HD, then did a restore with SL no problem. I attempted to do the same thing with a Lion boot disk I created and it still fails.

Why doesn't SL recognize the problem when attempting to install? I have an appointment at Apple tomorrow to bring in my iMac.... I wonder how much they'll charge me to replace a HD that isn't actually failing?

Ok, so update. I spent ~ 1 hour on the phone with apple support this morning and they had me try to check the HD SMART status from the boot disk and the same issue popped up, but when i try to verify the disk, it verifies with no issues. They set up an appointment at the Apple store closest to me for tomorrow at 10am for me to take my iMac in.

I was very clear that i did not want to pay for this issue as it was never triggered before lion install and my system operates perfectly. They said they would make note of it. From what i was told, SMART status is HW controlled and not SW controlled.

Will advise more after tomorrow's appointment. Would recommend your issues be escalated as well. There has to be many many more of us with this issue if this thread is already so long and lion only launched 2 days ago. If you dont speak up, they will NOT fix it and say that your machine is the one that is defective...
