Lion WARNING Power PC apps not supported :-(

Hi all,

I just wanted to warn everyone that if you install Lion you will nolonger be able to use PowerPC programs!

If I had known this I would never have installed it. I have seen no warning of this anywhere.

Hopefully Apple will sort this out..

You CANNOT dual boot a system with Lion. The Lion OS changes the firmware making it impossible to run Snow Leopard on the same hard drive. Lon was great but not it's the biggest let down I have ever experienced at Apple. This is not normal Apple stuff. Normally it just works... now it doesn't. Booting to an external drive may work but still slow. Point being Lion is not worth the upgrade. I'll be running 10.6 for quite some time until all the software vendors make software for lion. I got away from Windows from all the serious changes they made and to my surprise I got stuck in the same thing.

How hard would it be to dual boot a 3 day old i5 mini with 10.6? is it possible?

Hmmm, not sure, have to try that and see (I assume this i5 came with Lion pre-installed)

Doesn't work.

Well I guess that's the end of that idea, if you were trying to boot from an external? you were talking about an external were'nt you?

Agreed!

I find it unsettling that I have to search Apple documents or forums to learn that I will not be able to use the programs that I've paid good money for with their "upgrade". Apple has disappointed more people with this latest "upgrade" and I am unable to efficently use my new macbook for work, due to their movement away from average working customer needs. Since Lion has taken over, my productivity has decreased due to find work-arounds for their latest-and-greatest OS. I'm finding it harder to recommend Apple products these days, due to Apple's shortsidedness.

I should not have to look to see which of my programs require PowerPC. I am a high school math teacher, and I cannot use my equation editor on my new macbook air. I didn't know that it was a PowerPC program. All I knew was that it was highly recommended and worked like a charm! I spent my own money on this program, and now I have to find alternative methods if I want to use the macbook. I will NEVER upgrade my iMac. Too many issues with previous programs using Lion.

I don't know a lot about software development, but Apple should have allowed backwards compatibility. Will the "powers that be" hear our cries for help? Do they care? I hope so.

Apple did provide backwards compatibility for powerPC programs, called Rosetta. Apple provided Rosetta when they first made intel iMacs and macbooks, to allow powerPC programs to run. And it was a temporary solution until all the users like you and I replaced our old powerPC programs. The makers of those programs and products have had 6-7 years to replace or update their programs and products.

With LION [10.7] Apple finally removed the emulator, Rosetta. There is no going back.

I bought an apple because they seem more user friendly and more up to date and can handle most new programs and I never used a Mac before but apperantly Snow Leopard ran Power PC applications I thought the whole point of an upgrade was to improve the previous system and ADD new features, from what I've read OS X Lion has improvements but now I need PowerPC for an application crucial to my Psychology class and I can not use it I should have bought a used/refurbished computer and saved some money Apple NEEDS to fix this Problem like FAST!!!!!

You will find that (newer) Macintoshes that are capable of running Snow Leopard cost MORE.

For security reasons our office needs to run Snow Leopard. We recently purchased a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. It was more expensive than one with Lion.

Apple does not view this as a problem. If power PC programs are important to you. Do some research you may find out that Snow Leopard can be installed on your computer (people do this all the time).
