Lion WARNING Power PC apps not supported :-(

Hi all,

I just wanted to warn everyone that if you install Lion you will nolonger be able to use PowerPC programs!

If I had known this I would never have installed it. I have seen no warning of this anywhere.

Hopefully Apple will sort this out..

Apple did NOTHING to warn customers that PPC or Rosetta would not be supported in Lion. The only thing they publicized how great it was. I just got off the phone with a devestated customer which had me in tears because of how much Lion has ruined her life. Apple released this article a month later http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3938 but other than that on the website or in the App Store there is nothing that suggests this. These are the places where people look for compatibility isssues. Also speaking with various groups Apple has to appease upset customers even they failed to show any compassion from a group that is supposed to. I love this company but this was wrong, so very wrong. Rosetta needs to be implemented again. This is like the malware all over again.

Lion is actually wonderful, performance wise, but it won't be too wonderful for users for a while as the needed upgrades need to be brought into place. All I can say now is that this upgrade OS is costing me more than any other OSX upgrade has, but now that I'm working my way through to the other side I think it is a very worthwhile upgrade and a leap into the future that is a natural progress for Apple. I'd rather have this than be on the sidelines waiting for Windows 8 to arrive.

I just got the new Lion Mini and nowhere on the box does it say I couldn't use my old apps. Much as I hate to say this , windoze is much better at application support. Apple should try to keep their platform as compatible with prior Mac software as they can make it.

I don't read tech forums and I personally did not know about the drop of support until I transferred the files off my old 10.5 G4 mac.

Needless to say, I am disapointed.

This is the bottom lion (:- ), and this is where Apple should be making a big disclaimer and warning to customers, simply out of respect for not wanting to shock people after the deed is done. It's far better to have information and then be able to make decisions based on information rather than going ahead and upgrading, expecting the best, but getting the worst. It's always better to apprise customers when a big change is looming in the balance. I know I would have appreciated it.

I won't entirely disagree but, operating without a backup under any circumstances leaves you open to data loss when things go wrong, and things do go wrong (laptop lost/stolen/fell in the sink etc, hard drives die, houses get broken into etc) and that's without even considering user errors.

Not bothering to backup states how little value you put in your data.

I too am a photographer (once I earned a living but now I just tinker) I always have used Canon cameras and have lived with their incompatibilities since Snow Leopard, but generally I still use film (TriX, and I still miss RoyalX) so it's not too bad.

Mapping? I use Google/Google Earth but while these work for me I can see a level of need that they might not fulfill.

Don't know what to say, if these issues are serious for you then back to SL is the most prudent course, if not then you'll adapt, curse a little and move on 🙂

I used to be a press man, now I sell prints as a second job. I use any system and have a lot of older equipment that I use just for a specific look. Looks like I'll have to keep the old Mac running just for those apps. I tried Google maps and mapquest, I found them too innaccurate for routing locations. I was using Route 66 for X with good results. That too will stay on the old mac. Too bad, I realy wanted to get out of having multiple computers. Looks like I need to shop for an intel model with 10.5 or 10.6 on it.
