Why do many of my applications appear twice in launchpad?

I'm surprised no one else has asked this yet, but the search didn't turn up a thread: Many of my applicaitons show up twice in Launchpad for no apparent reason. Address Book, Safari, iPhoto, Calculator, Numbers, Keynote... Mostly (if not all) Apple applications.

I've used Spotlight to search the hard drive, thinking perhaps I actually had multiple copies of those applications but Spotlight is telling me there's just one of each.

So... Anyone else? How do I get it down to just one icon per application?

Launchpad scans both the /Applications folder and any Applications folders in your User's home directory.

Check to see if you have duplicates there.

Something has to change in launchpad as I have 6 pages of useless icons that I would like to delete. There seems to be little control at this time.

I have e.g. two icons for VLC - both run VLC, but if I drag one to the trash it just re-appears back in Applications - it is un-trashable !

Found it, just put an app om top of the other.
