Can't turn on web sharing

When I click the checkbox to turn it on it displays a dash in the checkbox, changes from 'Off' to 'starting...', and the gray indicator turns orange.

This lasts for about a second the turns off again.

Ideas? I need my localhost back!

In my case it was the Mono module. In Console (type Console into search, top right) I had:
org.apache.httpd: httpd: Syntax error on line 499 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 8 of /private/etc/apache2/other/mod_mono.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_mono.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_mono.so, 10): image not found

I wrote a blog post on Mono on Mac and included a link to the fix at the end here:

I had this message show up for me in Console:

org.apache.httpd: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 199.101.28.18 for ServerName

After a quick search, it boiled down to me adding the following line after #ServerName www.example.com:80

ServerName <computername>

<computername> is the name of my machine.

It also turns out that I had an old httpd.conf from 2008! I swapped that one out for the default .conf file and made custom changes based off the old file. I didn't find the line that includes #LoadModule fastcgi_module in the Lion-installed httpd.conf.default, so that didn't apply for me. I did have an old users.conf in /etc/apache2/users/ that I renamed as a backup.

To note — and this is only a unique case — my machine's name isn't localhost, and I couldn't change it TO localhost or anything else for the sake of testing, because it affects my installation of Reason. I discovered this a while back to my dismay; I had to reinstall it! I'm not sure of many programs that use the computer's name for authentication.

To get my Web Sharing to turn on.

Ok..here is what worked for me.

I found

etc/apache2/httpd.conf

I also found in there another httpd.conf.default

I DELETED the httpd.conf file and duplicated the httpd.conf.default file onto my desktop.

Renamed it by removing the " .default " and dragged it back into the apache2 folder.

My Web Sharing immediately turned itself on in System Preferences.

The solution that i found was really odd, but it worked.

When i upgraded my router, all my problems disapeared with it.

Web sharing started to work

Bonjour started to work

iTunes Home sharing started to work(because of bonjour i think)

The Router i had was a Belkin PlayMax, which through a bit of research, i found that it had a bug that was blocking bonjour from communicating with other computers.

I found the solution ages ago, just decided to post it now.

Can't turn on web sharing
