Screen saver pops up randomly!?!?

I've had an issue with screen savers in Lion. When my MBP plugged into power the screen saver is set to turn on 22 minutes after no activity. I've noticed today several times the screen saver has popped up in significantly less time than 22 minutes. Once in tried to pop up in the middle of scrolling through a website.

I am having similar issues with the inactivity timer not working correctly. This is causing problems with the screen saver, 1Password and Adium, that I know of.

I have disabled the screen saver and also the features of Adium and 1Password that respond to me being idle for a given amount of time.

Adium continually has the "Idle" sign on the Dock icon.

EDIT: I have tested this with both the power connected and running on battery, same behaviour each time.

I'm also experiencing the issues mentioned in this thread. I'm on a Mid-2010 15" 2.66 Core i7 MBP with anti-glare hi-res screen.

Issues I'm experiencing include:

  • Screensaver starts up immediately when booted to the login screen
  • Screensaver starts up immediately after logging in
  • Screensaver starts up at seemingly random intervals (timer is set to 20mins, have tried re-setting too), including while typing or using the mouse (internal keyboard & mouse)
  • Adium shows me as "Idle" regardless of what I try to do
  • Skype shows me as "Away" regardless of what I try to do (not good for business if clients think I'm unavailable!)
  • 1Password is almost impossible to use for entering new credentials, as I have to continually type my password in, even during entering data!

Disabling the screensaver obviously fixes some of the screensaver related issues, but not the other ones, as it is only one symptom of the problem. Lion does not accurately register idle status.

Any assistance greatly appreciate! Or an update for Lion 🙂

Seems like this problem is limited to Mid-2010 MBP's with i5/i7. Very unfortunate since this model line has had many problems interacting with Apple software (kernel panics, etc.)

Only way to solve this issue for now is to set the Start Screen Saver setting in preferences to "Never". If you are leaving your system unattended and want to lock it, then just Apple Menu --> Sleep.

Wouldn't be surprised if Apple never resolves this issue for us given that they did nothing about the hordes of Mid-2010 owners complaining of kernel panics and it never got a single fix.

I'm also having this problem on a 2011 MacBook Pro 15. Screensaver starts when I'm scrolling a window or even selecting text among other cases. I do have active corners to enable the screensaver; however, the mouse has been far from these locations. Not limited to Mid-2010. Hopefully, Apple will provide a fix (other than disabling the screensaver).

I am less annoyed because turning off the screen saver stopped it for me. But I still get the "Are you sure you want to quit everything and shutdown" message every few hour or so. What hurts though is when I go to lunch and come back to find the computer shutdown because I wasn't there to stop the shutdown. Or last night when I was watching a movie and it poped up in the background and I didn't see or hear it and it shutdown right at the climax of the film.

Yup, that happens to me as well. The second I play around with the Screen Saver preference the computer goes wild.

I have a question, my system is set to ask for a password when exiting the screen saver but when it does go into the screen saver it takes a while for me to be able to access the dialogue box I can enter the password into.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Same here. Mid-2011 i7 17". Screensaver and Adium both assume I'm idle almost all the time. I disabled both timers, and just have a hot corner to lock the screen now.

I've also noticed that the "Require Password..." setting for sleep/screensaver doesn't stick, and always goes back to immediate.

I'm guessing this may have something to do with FileVault, so I'll try turning that back off.
