Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

IzzyJG99, I had the same problem after a few minutes of being online immediately after upgrading. Then I unplugged the router and the modem and restarted them, and since then I have maintained a stable Internet conneciton. Try rebooting those two items and maybe even your computer too. Good luck, because If that doesn't work you're going to need it. I did all kinds of Google searches to fix the problem before the .1 release, and never found anything anywhere that shed light on the problem. I don't know why, but it seems that with Windows there are a thousand sites where you can find all sorts of solutions to a myriad number of problems. With the Mac, though, it's like there's a curtain drawn on the inner workings of an impenetrable fortress of an OS, and if Apple doesn't publish the answer then there is no chance in **** of ever getting the answer anywhere else. At least that's been my experience. I can't speak for anyone else.

Because coming to an Apple Support Discussion and mentioning that you like Windows 7 is like going to a Windows fourm and mentioning a preference for Mac OS X; it's of little utility and serves only to stir the pot and foment comment.

I also stated that your experience does not, in fact, mean that Lion was at fault for your situation and have given examples in this thread and elsewhere as to how that could be the situation.

"Because coming to an Apple Support Discussion and mentioning that you like Windows 7 . . ." I never said I liked Windows 7. I don't own Windows 7. What I said is, I heard it was a good operatin system. I own Windows XP and it is installed on my iMac and it was maintaining a stable Internet connection using the same hardware that failed when I was using Lion.

I and others do not get it. An OS is an OS is an OS. The question is which one does what you want it to do. These OSes are not relgions; they are not tenents of faith. They do not define a life philosophy and they are not politcal parties. They are tools, pure and simple. One is not morally superior to the other. They are the products of the human mind, albiet very high-functioning human minds.

I paid for a 27" iMac on the same day that Lion was released to the general public. I could have bought much cheaper computer with more advanced hardware, but because of the OS the Mac is stable and has presented no problems with viruses or malware and even the older ones work as well today as they did two or so years ago. So I paid the premium for the OS and the hardware engineering. And when I and others ran into the confounding and frustrating connectivity bugs contained in the initial release of Lion and no one from Apple stepped forward to own the problem or promise the solution, we were justifiably angry and distraught. Just as those whose computers still are still not fixed remain now.

This is not a lovefest. We want working computers and we paid for them. Would I go to a Windows forum and declare my love for Mac? I suppose I would if there were an occasion to and I were of such temperment. But I suspect the Windows folk wouldn't give a flip one way or the other, and I see no reason why anyone on a Mac forum would give a flip if someone came here saying they loved Windows rather than Mac. It's not a childish competition. These computers and their software are business tools, pure and simple. When they do their jobs, we are happy. When they don't do their jobs, we are entitled to an explanation of why they don't and when the problem will be fixed. Apple fails to answer those questions, and for that reason I remain disgruntled with Apple, and I feel sure I'm not alone.

Fred in Virginia. There are many trolls out there that cruise message boards and bash on products they don't like. Let's excuse the people that don't believe you.

Now, you bought a Mac because you want it to work. Have you called Apple support? They will bend over backwards to help you and I am sure your problem will be solved. The update stabalized wifi for me, but my issue was fixed last week with a very simple 2 minute process...did you see my post with instructions?

Good luck buddy...My dad has a windows 7 and it's okay. He is changing over to a mac soon, just like I did 2 years ago. But to each there own.

I also upgraded to 10.7.1 and it is better but still have the problem. Before the upgrade, the wifi drops were so much that I was sitting in front of the Mac by doing nothing and staring to the screen. Now, it still drops but frequency is low. I am afraid that frequency may get higher, because when I first installed Lion, also the wifi drop frequency was low, after some time of usage it got higher.

I've bought a 30 feet ethernet cable to plug between my router and Mac 2 days ago. I am an anti-cable guy but I have to use an ethernet cable after paying 2K USD for my beloved and rock-solid iMac!

I am still experiencing WiFi drops after the update, though possibly slightly fewer.

Additionally, I was getting a lot of Safari error pages saying that I was not connected to the internet and I am now getting error pages which say that Safari cannot find the server.

Not the most appropriate place to say this but the last few weeks have been the most disruptive, frustrating and damaging in 30 years of computer use and 27 years of Mac use.

I think that this is a pivotal point for Apple when the demographic shift of their customers reached a critical mass that having drawn in consumers several years ago with iLife etc. heralds the end of the concept of the traditional/typical Mac user, i.e. the creative professional, of which I would (though I don't klike being categorised) concede to being.

It has been on the cards for quite some time. I have worked in and belonged to other organisations who lose their identity when commercial success overides the original philosophy - this could hardly be more true than in the wake of the revelation that Apple has more cash than the US government and is the biggest grossing company on the planet.

At the mment, I'm cornered and cannot, following all the difficulties I have encountered, make a simple revertion to Snow Leopard - it would mean losing essential data (just don't ask how but Lion progressively cut me off from my Time Machine backups and now just deleted them!) - but my long term plan is to retreat to an environment which is stable and supports the way I work, probably Snow Leopard, and stay there like a grumpy luddite, albeit one who embraced new technology until it ate itself.

I have the same problem after 10.7.1. - no change!

Please Apple, make it better. It is not a good way to work with a internet connection which drops always after 2 minutes.

I have a iMac from End of 2009. (3,06 Ghz COre 2 Duo)

I uses a Wireless LAN Router Speedport W320V.

Changing the channel or from a/b/g to a/n and another frequence don't change anything.

I use a WPA2 Wireless LAN.

A lot of people have commented on how small the download for 10.7.1 is (<18 MB) when using Software Update. On the Support Downloads page, it is listed as almost 80 MB. Could that be related? Is the shorter download skipping something important? I don't know.

Re: Speculation on this board about whether Lion is causing routers to fail. That seems very odd, but I don't have the engineering knowledge to say it can or can't happen. In public Wifi areas, they have all kinds of devices and OSs using the Wifi. Does one of them cause the router to stop working? Never heard of that. Malicious hackers would love it as a way of messing with people and businesses. But if it happens, whose fault is it? OS 10.7 or the router?

In my expericence, 10.7 on my iMac dropped wifi many times, but the router (Airport Extreme) was never affected; other computers (Mac 10.6.8 and Windows 7) remained connected.

So far, no problem with 10.7.1, but that is obviously not true for all of you.

I posted earlier regarding connectivity issues. Zero connection issues in SL, upgraded to Lion on day 1, within half an hour (maybe sooner) after the install was completed I immediately began getting random loss of wi-fi (bars grayed out with no connection as well as bars remaining dark and everything indicating that I was connected, but no connection being registered by Safari), no pattern or predictability, problem persisted and worsened. And when I was able to connect on an intermittent basis, my speeds were a fraction of what I was getting pre-Lion (about 50% to 60% slower than my pre-Lion download speeds and about 30% slower on my upload speeds). I also noticed that -- again only after my Lion upgrade and never before -- my iPad2 began showing intermittent but infrequent connection issues. Far less than my April 2011 iMac 27 inch but nonetheless on an irregular regular basis with some drop of speed as well (but, again, not as dramatic a drop as with the iMac. Curiously, my laptop PC and my kids' Androids on the same wireless home network (HTC & SAMSUNG) experienced absolutely no connectivity issues, and their speeds remained throughout consistent with those they ran pre my Lion update and consistent with those upload and download speeds I enjoyed on my iMac pre-Lion.

SO . . . today I'm thrilled when I hear about .1 and rush to update. For the most part connectivity seems to have improved. Apparently no drops and the computer has not told me that I am connected while Safari, YouTube, Spotify, etc act as if I'm not connected. I don't know about the iPad yet because were still with the period of irregular regularity so that I don't know if I'm between episodes of connection problems or if the iPad has straightened itself out.

HOWEVER -- and this is big BUT: I am now getting a lot of Safari error pages with the grayed out writing and compass saying that Safari cannot find the server. I have to refresh repeatedly or go back and try again, and usually after the fourth or fifth time, it hits. It feels like Vegas, but I do better in Vegas. To be clear, I never saw one of these pages before . . . NEVER. Not pre-lion, not post-Lion with the connection issues, not ever. ****, I don't even know what server it's trying to find because, believe me, if I knew I'd go find it myself and put an end to it. Understand, this isn't humor for humor's sake. I don't want to know about lost servers or 4 8's on some DNS or Terminal pinging that you have to hide but not close. I also don't want to hear from WK telling me how it's my router's fault or how Apple couldn't have screwed up or how other things must have bugs in them when they never had them before and only manifested these peculiar symptoms, coincidentally, only after Lion. And I don't want to hear from him hiding behind jargon and explanations when any idiot can clearly grasp the fact that it worked before, it does not work now, PC and Androids on the same system continue to work fine and the only difference, only difference, only difference between before and now is that the machine that doesn't work anymore now got some bad dope call Lion. Well, not any idiot . . . WK still seems to be caught up the stream in denial.

Sorry for the length, but it had to be said. And being a firm believer that if you say something that's worth saying, it kind of undercuts your position if you don't have the brass to put your name to it, I sincerely remain a hopeful Apple enthusiast,
