Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Since upgrading my Fall 2009 21.5" iMac to Lion my wifi connection will drop out about every minute and the I have to turn Wifi off and then back on to get it to connect again. Is there any known way to fix this? Any suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks

I have a macbook (late 2008) that has a broken internal bluetooth module, so I use a third party usb stick for bluetooth.

My wireless card was having a hard time with DNS resolution and wifi access in general.

Disconnecting this usb stick, allows connecting back to my wireless network. After that I reconnect it and everything works fine.

I also had problems with my Imac I3 2010 since updating to Lion, never before. I was pulling out my hair from frustation. I have tried to reset SMC reset PRAM and reset my router (DLink dir-615). This seemed to do the job, but somehow only until I switched it off and on again.. Now I have fixed my IP and that seems to have solved this!!

Go to Network preferences click on WIFI on the left side. Make sure the right WIFI network is shown and click on advanced...

Then at TCP/IP at "configure IPv4" first copy the "IPv4 address". Then select "Using DHCP with manual address" and paste your address in the "IPv4 address"

I hope this will help some more people.. Good luck!

PS Here I was telling everyone how great apple is and how it never fails...

User uploaded fileSo my wifi has fallen off the face of the earth recently, When I had SL there wasnt a problem. Three weeks with Lion, one little problem and a call to Apple had a temp fix. Now this weekend I cannot get wifi to work to save my life, I moved my Imac to a different wall, about five feet closer to the router and really???? I havent had a drop all morning,(as I am knocking on a wooden desk!!!)

I tried putting the Mac back where it was. After powering down, moving it literally five feet and seeing if it would fire back up, and guess what???? No wifi. My prefered network will not even be noticed for almost six minutes. I am on a different channel than the people below me. So I guess I will have to re arrange the entire living room just to have wifi. Unreal.

Also, I read early in this thread about the RSSI values.... I think mine is too low????

There's no question that this is a major issue and not an isolated incident. My mid - 2011 i7 27" iMac constantly dropping wifi. Problem is nastier when I'm using Apple TV 2.0 to connect and stream music. So even when I'm not working on my iMac, I'm still faling prey to the nasty dropping WiFi issue as music just stops. Only solution? Turn WiFi off, then back on. Then I'm back for an hour or two until the issue repeats.

I've not called Apple Care but have changed DNS, PRAM, router/modem restarts and clearing all networks, destorying prefs and then some....

Yes. Before and after 10.7.1

BTW the phone and my MacBook Pro 2008 (w/Lion) have no problem with my WiFi network

Just to add one more to the list of Apple users experiencing Wi-Fi drop-offs after installing Lion, since I have seen no sign of Apple acknowledging this problem.

I am experiencing drop-offs from my main wireless device, an Airport Extreme v 5.7, and my WDS Airport Express v 6.3 keeps dropping off the WDS, even though it happily shows a green light.

I am using a mid-2010 i7 iMac with Mac OS X 10.7.1.

The only reliable workaround I have found is to restart the Airport Extreme and Express.

No, your RSSI value is spectacular (the closer to zero the value, the stronger your signal, so -18 is wonderful, I've currently got -55 on my MBP and it connects just fine.)

However… RSSI is merely a report of signal strength but not of quality.

If there's some device nearby interfering with your signal (microwave oven, baby monitor, Bluetooth devices, etc.) you can have a strong signal but still have difficulty communicating.

Hi Wouto,

thank you for the tip with the ping `route get default | awk '(/gateway/){print $2}'`

Unfortunately, this does not help.

I get several request timeouts regularly, sometimes for longer times.

So it is more or less a diagnostic tool, not a remedy.

But the diagnose is:

WLAN access is lost - my local LAN printer disappears / reappears.

So, internet access is only one symptom of general WLAN illness in Lion.

WIFI connection can drop every five minutes if Lion feels like it.

Really nice.

The only "remedy" is to close WIFI and then reconnect.

I even installed a second WIFI router to switch between the two to make this task faster.

And this is very tedious.

Funnily enough, Apple Care advised me to boot into recovery partition and reinstall.

But this fails, as internet access is needed ⚠

All the best

Hi All, I ran into this problem on a brand new mbp 15". Very frustrating. Wifi was dropping every minute or so, funny thing is that when I boot into my Win 7 bootcamp partition the wifi connection is perfect -- no disconnects at all.

Cleary this is an OSX Lion driver issue that needs to be addressed.

I tried all the recommendations and the only thing that has worked for me is using the ping script (aka keepalive script) as recommended in several previous posts. As long as that ping is running, my connection stays up.

# ping -i 5 <ip address of wifi AP/router>

My wifi connection hasnt dropped once since I started using the script over a week ago.

Cheers,

I found some solution. Before my imac 2011 can't access internet after 5 mins if no action. But 2 laptop and 1 ipad work fine.

Airport no drop and full signal if turn on/off airport it work again but if no action internet go to down.

I try many fix method but not work for me.

Finaly i try disable WMM mode in wireless router (before is enable). Bingo!! my imac internet no drop again. All device is work great.

I use WPA2 but if set to WEP can enable WMM. I don't why but the internet no drop too.
