Wow, people. Grow up and be admins. Long before OS X I was installing NetBSD on PPC macs and running them as internet servers. Imagine my joy when Apple built OS X on top of BSD. OS X IS a server platform at its heart. The consumer version strips much of that away.

Apple's Server Admin GUI was always crap but the underlying technology is rock solid. I had to turn off my web and mail servers in the GUI because my configurations broke the GUI but they ran great!

You want a GUI to run your server? Install Webmin.

It's UNIX people. Learn to use bash or csh or stay out of the terminal.

The only thing I can see the server version adding that I really need for a server is a kernel tuned for server performance instead of desktop use. The rest is fluff.

So Apple dumped MySQL in favor of PostgresSQL... And?

Why is everyone crying so foul and saying it's a deal breaker? Just go here and download the MySQL .dmg archive for 10.6 and install it on your server.

Pros:

1) You get the latest version of MySQL and can update to the latest MySQL whenever you feel like it.

2) Download the MySQL Workbench GUI and you can have a workflow tool 1 gazillion times better than anything Apple EVER came out with for the entire management of MySQL - including server management.

3) It comes straight from the MySQL Development group - not an included binary version from Apple.

4) Install the MySQL System Preferences pane and - manage it from the system preferences on your Mac.

Cons:

1) You're gonna have to actually do some reading on the MySQL Dev site to tweak a few setup configuration details such as setting the root password. Big deal.

OK everyone, take a deep breath. It's not the end of the world! MySQL is fully supported on Lion Server as it is running on my production server and I have yet to encounter a problem. Did it take a few extra steps or a little extra time to get it running? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes - by a long shot. My dev team has now started developing for the PostgresSQL database. Whoopee so we now have two DB options when developing data solutions.
