I am also having the same problem except I have sound but no picture on my avi files. I have a Macbook running 10.7 and QuickTime Player 10.1 with Perian installed. This was also working fine until I updated to Lion.
Ask the developers of Perian when they will update for Lion.

Just upgraded to OS 10.7 and cannot duplicate the problem. AVI files tested good in in both QT X and QT 7 player apps on my system. What compression formats are in your AVI clips? My tests were made using DivX5/MP3 compressed data in AVI container.
I had this same problem and someone on here helped me solve it. See if you have DIVX For Mac installed. If you do then uninstall it and only keep Perian. Apparently the DIVX codec isn't yet compatible with OS X Lion and it keeps AVI files from playing on quicktime.

As stated, I did not have any problem and could not duplicate the original poster's problem.

Negative. I do not have any DivX components installed and am using Perian for playback. AVI (DivX5/MP3) files were created using Visual Hub under Snow Leopard. And, if I cannot get Visual Hub to work under Lion (PPC version is not Lion compatible), then I will drop AVI altogether since I only use it to send my sister clips.
I'm sorry I meant to reply to the original poster. He might have the DIVX components installed and that's what might be hindering his playback.
That did it, thanks guys. There is a conflict with DivX, you need to unistall their codecs and safari extensions etc.
Thanks for the help I have everything working. To get Visual Hub working again just follow the instructions here http://www.techspansion.com/vhlion.html.
I have not been able to play many of my .mov files in 10.1 these are files I have pushed out of After Effects CS4 and Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 there are very few compression settings I can choose that will allow for playback in Quicktime 10.1 things like the Animation codec and even H.264 result in a black movie file during playback in 10.1. I've attempted to remove everything that looks remotely related to DIVX but it hasn't fixed the issue I am having.
Do you guys have any idea what might be the issue?
Oh and I do still have perian installed.
Thanks,
J.
Use Quicktime 7 instead.
why do i have to use quicktime7 to play my movies in lion? i just reinstalled perian, and still some avi files only play with quicktime7. this wasn't a problem in sl.
avi is an outdated container format beloved of Windows users. It needs additional software to play on a Mac. Some of that software may not yet have been updated for Lion.
Quicktime 7 can't be installed in Lion so "use Quicktime 7 instead" unfortunately is not an option.
I found some Divx components that I missed the first time around and removing them seems to have done the trick.
What is this Perian thing, and where do I get it?
