Lion Finder sidebar color?

If this is your on,y issue then there is an easy fix

Search back for my post for details but basically open Automator and create a new application, choose command shell put the text killall finder or something like that and save it. Then put that "app" in your list of startup items through system preferences, accounts.

Each time you boot it runs your app and restarts finder for you.

Typing this on my iPad hence can't remember the exact details.

Anybody notice now in mountain lion you cannot use the dock anymore to drag a file out of downloads icon across the the finder icon so it opens up finder so you can move the file in one operation?

Now you drag to desk top then open finder then drag file to where you want to go.

Another backward step from apple.

Same problem of you insert a data cd or DVD you no longer since SL have the little curved button top right hand side to turn on sidebar to move files.

Each new version of OSX is forcing you to take more steps to do things.

Forget dumbing down osX to iOS it is dumbing it down to equivalent of android?

Its the same thing. The bundle I mention has what you need to make it work so you don't have to go to different sites to get what you need, or go through automator and the way I and other posted awhile back for the script. I mentioned that because there are probably some people who don't have SIMBL or the bundle installed. So if those who decide to download the bundle I mentioned on MacUpdate and get everything installed. You just need to put the scipt into your log in items so that everytime you log on, it makes the changes.

In order to removing things off the dock now in ML is you have to bring the app, or file off the dock to a certain point on your screen until you get that icon lets you know it'll be removed. Apparently enough people complained about how too easy it was to remove stuff from the Dock, because people would accidently remove something they didn't want. So Apple changed it with ML.

Does it do this with opening files - dragging the file to the icon and it not only opening the application but that file, too? If so, man, I was just recently bragging to a PC user how much better our dock was than the taskbar.

That's also exactly my observation. It's actually getting user-unfriendlier every time.

It sure is. It's like Apple is hiring UI experts from other major corporations, which shall remain unnamed. Interestingly, it seems like those major corporations are hiring UI experts from Apple.

It seems like Apple has no idea how its products are being used. It thinks it will tell us how to use it instead, but what we want to do is try out its features and see if we can incorporate them into a work flow that already works for us. I just don't have time to relearn my operating system and be FORCED to rejigger my workflow every time Apple releases an OS. I'm in a groove that works very well for me in the running of my business, and while I don't mind learning some new, cool tricks that will make my life easier, let me reiterate - I'm running a business, and time is money. So many of the changes do NOT improve my efficiency at all.

You can still do that. I just tried it right now by dragging a picture into Pixelmator and it opened up the app plus the picture.

I misread what dawson said earlier my bad. I never knew you could drag a file from a folder in the dock to Finder without actually having to open Finder. I normally just drag one file to another from the Dock without needing to use Finder. So you can still do that in ML.

I totally agree. These icons represent the Mac's basic structure. They are the headquarter of navigation. They make the Mac easy to use. I don't want to read the list every time. I want to quickly see where to click.

thanks for the info but what I am talking about is an operation like this

you still can for eg from the dock click on downloads, select a file (eg torrent) then drag it across to the trash

what you can no longer do is drag the file across to the finder icon momentarily, then it used to pulse kind of a finder window would open then you could drop the file where you like - the whole time you have not released the mouse button - apple have confirmed (via other posts) that the finder icon will no longer open that way

people talk about snow leopard but if you could get time machine working on tiger and drivers for the new hardware I would choose tiger!!!!!

agreed and aside from the lack of colour the big bug bear for me is also the little oval/square button that used to show and hide the sidebar in one operation

mount a data disk on your desktop and open it, by default (can this be changed?) you get a minimistic finder window opening with no toolbar and no sidebar - one could easily ask why?

anyway in older versions SL and earlier you pressed the little button on the right of the toolbar (where the full screen option is now) and the toolbar and sidebar would appear.

Now you have to go up to the menu, choose sidebar (which doesnt work due to a bug they havent fixed yet) then choose show toolbar then choose show sidebar one more time and finally it appears otherwise it is open a second finder windows with Cmd N which oddly opens with the sidebar open so you can copy files from one finder window to the other - I mean this is so archaic

yes it was tricky if you hovered too long you got a different response, the trick was to hover over it and moment it pulsed move the mouse away then a new finder window appeared

the thing I have always like is the way you can hover over folders etc in finder and new windows open etc none of this open two windows in each navigate the from and to locations then finally make the move

one "trick" which does still work at least is to select/highlight what you want Cmd C then navigate to the destination folder and if it was a move you wanted then press Option Cmd V rather than just Cmd V and this moves the files.

maybe that is too convenient so it might be the next feature for chopping block :-(

I just dragged documents down to the doc and you can drag from the downloads folder across to the docs and it opens a finder window in a similar way however the window is at the bottom of the screen and partially hidden kind of useless

the old way the finder window opened in the middle somewhere wherever it was last - sigh

I also miss the button which was replaced by the "full screen" icon. It brought more screen space than full screen. But obvously not many people compained about it's removal. :-(

you will never guess what has happened to me now after upgrading mountain lion through software update

I have no icons in sidebar at all that is right just the words with no icons at all

A command I on my home folder still shows the coloured house but I have zippo just looking at it thorugh finder
