Lion Finder sidebar color?

Hey!

I've just upgraded to Lion and I'm kinda dissapointed of many reasons, like the grey aweful sidebar icons in the finder app.

Is there any solution to change it back to the normal like it was in Snow Leopard?

The other thing is the Mail app. The new surface looks horrible as well, even if I change it to "classical view".

I want the older back! It was good as it was!

There is no way of adding color unless there is a third party solution out there. Grey is the new color!

Hi All,

looks like Simon fixed the issue with sideeffects.

Still I have another work around if others are having hassles.

I updated from SL to Lion.

Tried the simbl route and then the Lion Tweaks. With the usual hassle of having to relauch finder.

So I located the icons:: /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources

The coloured icons were there, I backed up the currently used "Grey Icons", renamed/replaced them with the coloured icons and bingo. All sidebar icons I changed to coloured with no hassles of needing to re-launch finder.

My Lion machine didn't have the coloured icons so I copied over.

I also used CandyBar to change other sytem folders aswell.

Just another work around FYI.

Hi Simon,

Yes, not supposed to work but it does????

I think by overwriting the grey icons with the colour icons in the sytem resource file, the system will simple reference them as usuall.

I didn't find any metadata in the icon files so I guess that's why it would work after all, the icons are referenced locally.

My MBP was always a Lion machine so never had colour icons which I verifified afer my successful hack on my iMac (originally SL which had colour icons and the Lion OS grey icons after updatin OS) and opening the resource folder.
I just copied over the grey icons as stated and no worries.

Just one of those, it's just an image so how is it referenced/loaded/created to sit in the sidebar???

The grey icons for the mail sidebar are in there aswell but my hack hasn't worked there as yet.

Thanks for the reply Simon, it's good to spread the love.

Cheers Gaz

FYI Simon,

when I tried my replacing hack on the mail icons, I ended up with what I would call weird pixelated colour mail icons.

I made sure dimensions were the same but as the file format wasn't in photoshop a creted bitmaps and renamed.

Oh well, I'd love a mail fix as well buddy....

So far my hack has worked on My iMac originally SL, 2 x MBP 13" that had Lion originally and a iMac which had Leopard which went through the SL to Lion upgrade.

In the interest of problem solving as you're the system guru, I'm running NTFS for MAC OS on all machine
if that would make any difference at all???

Cheers mate, Gaz 😎

I'm a graphic designer and web developer and I have a 125 applications in my application folder alone. I run VMWare Fusion on my system so I'm able to run WinXP and Win7 on my Mac. I also run a MAMP on my local server for testing some scripting and database languages I'm learning. And I'm on my computer, well, most of the time I'm not sleeping, showering, or going to church.

That's a power user.
