Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?
I've seen many comments about people having different problems and trouble with the new OS X Lion, does anyone recommend me to download it? My current OS is Mac OS X 10.6.7.
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Eloquent, Alex. I mean your prior explanation of users' distress.
Good night. You too, Charles. I know this is stressful.

Oh boy, this thread has turned out to be a record breaker.
Actually... no. I've been involved in threads which were longer, both in numbers of posts and in length of time they were active. For example there was a monster thread in about 2006, when the Capacitor Plague hit eMacs, which lasted well over six months and had multiple thousands of posts.
Of course, that particular thread was about real world problems, not about mindless whining.
OK so I haven't spent as long on these disscussions as some people, but then there was never the need to up till now.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I said that as a sceptic, I installed Lion with trepidation, but having taking precautions I cannot find anything wrong with the installation and whilst I am still not sure if I like it, when the time comes that I will have no choice but to use it (and for all who will say I will always have a choice, it will come) I can.
You might like to play Devils Advocate, but if you really can't say something helpful, don't slight everyone that posts on here.
On that rant, I am going to go somewhere where my comments might be appreciated.
😠
You're being an apologist with the attitude of a Fox TV reporter. |
😁😁😁 Best quote of the thread!
Stating facts, laddie, stating facts. You merely don't like the facts.
Oh, you weren't one of those doing the mindless ranting. We've seen two of the ranters start raving in reply to me already. I expect more.

unfortunately for him, his nice quote does not change the facts:
1 the vast (and I mean VAST) majority of people simply do not see the problems he sees.
2 even the vast (and I mean VAST) majority of those who have problems with Lion (which includes me) do not see the problems he sees
3 that he is having problems does not mean that Lion is flawed. (the presence of Resume, and Versions, and AutoSave, and the non-presence of Rosetta and a reliable SMB stack, now _those_ mean that Lion is flawed... but most of that list ain't ever gonna be fixed, so it's like it or lump it time. And that, too, is a fact whether you, or I, want it to be one.)
You no like? Tough. Apple's market ressearch says that the iPadification of Lion is a Good Thing™. It also says that only a few hold-outs (like me) even notice that Rosetta is missing, and that we are vastly outnumbered by the hordes of newbies who simply don't care. And it says that lots and lots and lots of people, mostly newbies, also either don't care about or actually like Resume, Versions, and AutoSave, so those of us who don't like it get to be ignored. Them's the facts, laddie, and there is _nothing_ that you can do about it. Not. A. Thing. You say you have a problem? Cool. In most cases, the problem is of your own making, and can be fixed... if you are willing to go through the steps necessary to do the fix. If you start ranting about Lion eating your hardware I will ignore you, as will Apple. If you start ranting about Lion messing up your data I will ask you where your backup got to. If you rave about how difficult it is to go back to SL I will just look at the hard drive which contains _my_ backup and recall the ease with which _I_ went back to SL, and i will laugh at you. Having a good backup doesn't solve _all_ problems, but it does make fixing most of them a lot easier.
And we now return you to the ignorant ranting and raving, currently in progress.

The ignorant ranting and raving on this thread is only yours, laddie. The fact that you use such derogatory terms and unnecessary inflammatory language suggests you are here for one reason and one reason only: to irritate people and make them feel unwelcome. In short, you're a troll.
One thing I'd like to see Apple improve is more active moderation of these forums. We know moderators are here because they 'branch' discussions from time to time. However, allowing vexious unsavoury trolls like this to roam free on an Apple.com site only serves to bring both Apple and the community that this service is provided for into disrepute. Why don't the mods do more to look after their customers and kick people like this off the site?
How many new Apple customers I wonder have been put off from Apple products by this ranting, ignorant person? How many has he made think that Apple is an elitist product for elitist self-regarding bores?

There's a report abuse button on the bottom of each post. (Or, at least, there is around here.) Use it.
And, oh... I see that you simply cannot refute any of the facts I've stated, so you're making more appeals to emotions. Facts are facts, laddie. You don't have to like them. They exist whether you do or not.
Fact: The VAST majority of those who have moved to Lion (which is now a number in the _millions_) have no problems with Lion, or have problems which are easily fixable and have been (mostly) fixed.
Fact: the VAST majority of problems noted on this thread are in two categories: easily fixable, and rare. The easily fixable ones are just that, easily fixable. The rare ones are considerably more resistant to fixing, but because they're, well, RARE, simply don't get much attention from Apple. (I leave out the utter nonsense such as those who insist that a new OS caused their hardware to fail.)
Fact: certain new features are here to stay. Some may not like them, but as the VAST majority either do like them or simply don't give a ****, Apple will keep them until they come up with something new... and then they will be gone. And those who want them back won't be able to get them back, either.
Fact: certain old features are no longer with us and will never, ever, come back.
If pointing out these facts makes me a troll, then by all means report me. Go for it. Do it now.
If you start ranting about Lion eating your hardware I will ignore you, as will Apple.
Fine by me, Charles. You can ignore me, as I will ignore you. What matters is that Apple didn't ignore me. It got the Lion overheating analysis and replaced my logic board and SSDs at no charge, no questions asked. (Was it culpable or was it AppleCare?) That's all I required.
Time for bed, Charles. You've been up for hours.
PS Some of your prognostications regarding Apple's concern sound right, others ring hollow. Too much mixing of the meaningful and the meaningless. Focus.
G'nite again.
My experience is this - I immediately noticed Rosetta had gone and several old favourites no longer functioned. I also noticed how the fans raced as they tried to keep my old '08 PBP cool. Then I tried to use Aperture and discovered my max 8Mb ram was not enough to run both it and Lion smoothly. I've had almost daily crashes.
Why does Apple say Lion is usable on my machine? A lot of un-necessary gloss and very little of value is my considered opinion.
Firebird28, racing fans indicates some process(es) are using lots of cpu cycles. Spotlight does that for several hours after any major upgrade. I have seen reports in these discussions of Spotlight never completing and restarting after every boot. Something to check out.
I have an 08 iMac with 4GB of RAM and it is running better than it did with Snow Leopard. Aperture is also running fine.
(I assume PBP is MBP and 8Mbram is 8Gb ram.)
I have seen reports in these discussions of Spotlight never completing and restarting after every boot.
Interesting. I've noticed that spotlight in Lion indexes evertime I reboot into Lion after using SL on my external disk. Is that normal, and can I stop it if it isn't?
I am no expert on Spotlight, but if you allow spotlight to search your Snow Leopard external disk , it would be re-indexing it after each time Snow Leopard has run. If the indexing takes a short time I wouldnt worry about it. If there is no need for you to use spotlight from LION to find files on your Snow Leopard external disk you can add that external disk to your Spotlight "privacy" list. Go to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy and add the Snow Leopard external disk.
Thanks bobwild. I hadn't considered that Spotlight in Lion was trying to index my SL disk. I'll check those preferences.
Thanks again. 🙂
Upon clicking the green + button left top on a new Air, I was amazed that its action had changed. That is non-intuitive and represents a fundamental change to the user interface--I believe this was previously a consistent action across all upgrades of X. Consider--hypothetically--a fully mature OS, and wether the need to make some change, any change, might result in this type of evolution.
