Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?

I've seen many comments about people having different problems and trouble with the new OS X Lion, does anyone recommend me to download it? My current OS is Mac OS X 10.6.7.

Hi Peter

I agree with you that there are polarised opinions on here, but I'm not sure I accept your characterisation as being the fundamental driving force behind this book-length thread.

I've been following this thread from the start; I ducked out around page 70 and slipped back in about page 100 or so. IMO, what's driving it is two separate dichotomies:

A

i. there are some people with real problems with Lion

ii. there are some old forum hands who dismiss those problems as being the fault of those users; moreover, they do so in unnecessarily combative and aggressive terms which only serve to drive further replies.

B

i. there are some people who think Lion is an attempt to 'dumb down' OS X to be like an iOS toy operating system

ii. there are some people who think whatever direction Apple is going in is probably the right one; after all, almost all of us are Apple customers because we like what they've done in the past.

So this second tension is really a matter of trust: some people have lost faith in Apple after seeing Lion, others have not. This is my 'problem'; for the first time since I became a Mac user, I don't trust where Apple are going.

Best

Just a word of warning, among the growing number of applications which isn't compatible with OSX 10.7 Lion you can add to it Norton Antivirus 11 for Mac. Symantec's web site indicates "Mac OSX Lion is not currently supported by Norton for Mac Products". That may perhaps be part of the problem of bookup lockups and such. So is any virus protection available for OSX Lion 10.7?

ClamXav is recomended often, I won't miss Norton, AntiVirus software manufacturers should be able to keep up.

Well, that's a little bit unfair. There is also

C

i. There are people that didn't embrace the new features, don't like any of them, so they refuse to get the best out of Lion often complaining that this and that is missing

ii. Others appreciate Lion, like the new interface, took the time to see what changed and when possible explain to the people above how to make this and that working even if in a different way.

D

i. There are people that fear OS X has been dumbed down only for the introduction of Launchpad, since it may make an office computer looking too much like a mobile device, defined by them as "a toy".

ii. Other people either ignore Launchpad because they organized already the workflow in a efficient way or appreciate the new feature because, to be honest, it is the fastest way to scroll through all applications.

I'd say that the only people with a right to complain (hard) are the ones from A-i. Otherwise it is just a fight between reactionaries and progressives. Cons and Libdems. Montecchi and Capuleti. That's why this discussion is never ending!! 😀

I take issue with launchpad being the fastest way to scroll through apps:

If I was able to organize my Apps folder properly (and move Apple apps into the right places without changing the ACLs onr at a time) I could screenshot it for you:

User uploaded file

As you can see, I can navigate to apps by navigating to their specific app category folder with one click and then a mouseover. With Launchpad, I would have to swipe back and forth untikl I spotted the app -- which is made more difficult by the lack of any organization tools other than clicking and dragging apps around which take much more time than just dropping them in a folder.

True, I use the same Applications stack in the dock organized as a list. In the same way you do. But Launchpad has the advantage of showing large icons, organized in screens easily accessible with a simple 2 fingers swipe.

I totally agree that organizing LP is a mess, tho. The icons move all over. At least there could be an option to sort the icons in alphabetical order on each screen. But once it is organized it stays.

BTW You can stll organize LP with (dark linen) folders. Just drag an icon over another. A new LP folder gets created and the the icons moved in there. Again, I don't understand the reason why LP shouldn't follow the Applications folder organization.
