Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?

I've seen many comments about people having different problems and trouble with the new OS X Lion, does anyone recommend me to download it? My current OS is Mac OS X 10.6.7.

I agree Gene. This has also been a very expensive fustercluck for me as well. It's forced me to take time from work to deal with getting the RIGHT Snow Leopard install disk, and have even driven to the Apple store to buy one. They don't sell it any more! Wasted time and money driving. Tried a reinstall from my MBP disk through a firewire connection and an hour later, My iMac tells me that the ATI or USB kexts are improperly installed. And my Time Machine backup is on a drive that has become flakey. Will try my 3rd reinstall tonight when I hopefully will have the right Snow Leopard install disc and then there is the lovels update process which will take another few hours.

Wasted most of the weekend trying to get back to Snow Leopard and I am STILL in process of trying this. I'm out of state at the monent and have my SL install disk back at my house in Texas. Royal, ROYAL PITA.

I don't have the time to spend on a longer letter expressing my dismay at this release.

It may work for some, but when it EFFs up, it EFFs up BIG, wasting customer, money loyalty and trust in Apple's commitment to quality.

Yes there might be some improvements but often this is just an excuse to force Users to buy updates for all their major applications once again.

Paranoia much? That argument would only hold water if (a) Apple were the vendor for all these "major" applications (hint: they're not), and (b) that actually upgrading most of them was required (hint: it isn't).

[cue rant about how evil Apple must be since six year old Office 2004 no longer runs]

You can install Rosetta on Lion, do as follows:

Get your Snow Leopard DVD's, insert the disc that contains the extra installations, run it, and select to install Rosetta, after that, reboot, and bingo!!! you can install Microsoft Office 2008 whit out problema!!! I haven't try to install other PowerPC software, but I think that they have to work as well.

Which will do nothing, since Office 2008 runs quite well in Lion on its own, without Rosetta.

It's a Universal app, you see. Microsoft's first one... the previous Office 2004 was a Carbon monolith.

@Marc, except that the installer that is wrapped around the Microsoft Office 2008 package does require Rosetta. So, even though Office 2008 itself runs fine, one can't install it from disc without the Rosetta package. This is one of the 3rd-party app chuckles for a while....

cheers!

@Alex - it is likely that you MBP disk does not have the appropriate drivers and support files for an iMac. This has been the case for many years - install discs delivered with a system are for that system family.

you might be able to use the MBP disc to install on another MBP, but not on an iMac, Mac Pro, etc.

if you want to 'retrograde" your new iMac (I'm assuming it is a new one), there is a method to create your own Mac OS X 10.6.8 v1.1 system that you can copy to the iMac. This system will support the current iMac hardware configuration.

The procedure sounds really complicated, is actually straightforward if one just walks through it prior to trying to figure it all out. If you'd like to try, check out: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3264421?start=0&tstart=0

Please note that in the beginning, in the Required Resources section, the last item, System Image Utility, is actually located in the Server Admin Tools 10.6.8 package, and no, you don't need a server to download, install or use this package.

cheers!

Yeah, for me the first thing I did was dump the iCal skin for Aluminium. I tried the Address Book in Aluminium but changed it back -- it looked stupid, unlike SL ver. and the Lion ver. isn't too bad. At least they didn't make it flip pages. Glad they didn't get that idea.

LOL, I would have loved flip pages! Just goes to show that you can never please everyone at the same time! 😁
